ok 49 wd wired up per dueys diagram. negative ground (i think, thats how it was when i got the tractor but im not sure if it ever really was working that way). . not sure how to tell either.
it has a mag, not a dist. when i run tractor, ammeter pegs to negative side of ammeter. i reversed the wiring on the ammeter, and it read nothing lights dont work. but key turns off tractor now. not worried about the lights im just tired of jump starting the tractor. your guys knowledge would be very much appreciated. thanks , brian |

What are you using a generator or alternator? If genny is it 6 volt with cut out relay or do you have a regulator? If you crossed the ground hook up from what it was( with generator) you may have let the smoke out of the genny.

if you connect an alternator up backward (+ ground), it will blow out the regulator and no longer work... You need a negative ground on almost all alternators. If the amp gauge reads backward, you reverse the leads on the gauge... but alternator big terminal is + and battery negative is ground.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

The amp meter was originally set up for positive ground so with a neg ground alternator it would read backwards. My WD45 has been that way since I put the alternator on it 10 or so years ago. If you wired it backwards and the amp meter had already been switched the alternator may be smoked.
Check voltage at you battery with the engine off, and then with it running. You should have 12 not running and at least 13.5 running. |

If you have a 10SI alternator , there is a hole on the back (looks like a upside-down U) mouse hole .. just inside the alt is a tab that sticks up off regulator board. If you use a small metal probe or a screw driver to ground that tab against alternator case it grounds regulator to full output.
If everything else is working, (brushes and diode trio ) you should get full output.
