 Topic: D-17 Series IV Hydraulic Issues

Helping a friend with a D-17 Series IV. The lift arms will not go down. Checked the hydrualic oil and it was milky so we drained it down. Cracked the lines going to the lift cylinders and still can't get them to go down. Can someone please help us out? Also what does the hydraulic sump is a Series IV hold? I am sure it is different than the rest of the D-17's being it has a different hydrualic pump. Thanks for your help.

Has the three point been used? sometimes they just 'stay' where they were left because thats what time does to us either makes us creaky or weak. Just cracking a line on oil will not release the same as taking a line off. might have to put some weight to it.
I took the sump off my 170 and cleaned the piuckup screen which the oil was milky in ... and the screen was so plugged the screen got sucked away from the frame that held it.
How many gallons it holds? I don't know, but pour till the stick says full.
Others will have better answers. Hope you will be successful.

Cory - Series IV holds 26 quarts in the power director/hydraulics compartment.
Do the lift arm not go down even with the tractor off? If the tractor is off and the lift arms won't go down sounds like there is some kind of obstruction in the valve stack preventing the oil from returning to the sump with the lift lever held all the way forward. Mike

If you removed a line from ONE of the lift rams and when you stand on the arms they won't go down, you have a problem with one or both of the hyd lift rams. Three point hitches will usually go down by their own weight but snap-coupler arms will not on a series 4.

Cory, your D17 has a simple but common problem. The traction booster linkage is rusty and will not release from the valve body. You can pull it back by hand, but the long term fix would be to remove the pivot that the actuator rides on, clean it up, and put a lot of anti seize on it. Problem solved.

The Traction Booster valve can stick & hang up because it's a spring-return valve.
Oil it up good and work it back and forth so that it's free.
Kinda hard to see underneath the control platform; but see pic.
And, like DSeries4 said, sometimes the mechanical linkages can "freeze-up" ...make sure those are not sticking either
 .
The linkages for the controls and feed-back from the 3-pt need to turn freely...

Cory, Listen toD series 4 and Gatz. I'v got a series IV and while bushhogging two years ago the mower went up and stayed up. Finally found the stuck traction boos valve. Cleaned and lubricated well. No problems since.
