We had our local show, the '45 holds a consistent 45 on the dyno and the 17 was at 50. It has the early zenith carb, maybe it is holding it back a bit or is this normal? I do not know if has been overhauled.

My 1954 WD45 with 4.125 overbore pulled 48+ HP on the dyno at the GOTO in Portland in 2008. It has MS 464 carb.

The 464, 561, 773, & 871 family of carbs work quite well on a 45' motor and larger bored WC motors that have a little bit of work done. Slide in one of Barney's custom Cams, and one of my custom E.I. Distributor's, and not a lot of money is spent which makes for a nice running combo...

Most WD-45s that I have with a overbore always put out 49 to 51hp. Maybe the new overbores have less compress or it doesnt have the carb kit on it. Years ago when I worked at Sealedpower , we made the overbore kits for ACS and others and they were shipped with bigger jets and vent.

I believe the 45 was overbored in 1978. It showed 47 in early 90's(same dyno). This is a different carb, still 464. It is electronic, msd coil.
I could ream jets a couple thou and try again tomorrow, if it is worth the effort ??!! |

Are you sure your carb is completely open under full load ? And is your tractor running at least 1720 with no load?

you can probably tell me quicker than I can look it up. the d17 should be xxxx at no load and the 45 xxxx at no load ? I can check that in the morning.
thanks |

The 17 should run at 1950 to 2000 rpm no load high idle. Make sure the carb is syncronized to the gov.

how do you sync your carb to your dyno? I have heard of this before but have no idea how to do it, or make sure mine is....I just bolted the carb off my 45 on my WC and it seems great....and its a completely different carb than what was on it.

Not to the dyno but to the governor on the tractor. Of course you do this with the tractor NOT running. Disconnect the link from the carb to the gov arm at the arm. Put the throttle lever on the quadrant to the full speed position. Hold the throttle on the carb to wide open position. The link that you disconnected should be either a slip fit or up to 1/16" too long to fit in the gov arm. To change it you need to bend the arm with a special tool. If you try bending it with a prybar you might hurt the governor internals.
The tool can be made by finding a short pipe, maybe 1" black pipe, has to fit over the gov arm with some room and maybe 4 or 5 inches long. Weld a washer at each end that just slides over the arm. Cut a hole in the middle of the pipe so a 1/2" or 5/8" bolt will fit through the hole. Weld the corresponding nut over the hole. Now you have the tool. Slip it over the arm and depending on which way you want to bend the arm place it so the bolt is to the front or rear and turn the bolt in to bend the arm. The longer you make the pipe the better as long as it's not longer than the gov arm. The governor can be on the doggy side if it's not in sync. Good luck.

My 1959 was overbored in the 70's with M&Ws and in the late 80;s I put a 175 cam and D-19 carb Got 65hp on one dyno and the other dyno said 69hp. and ofcoarse the operator has to calculate because of a 548 pto and not a 540. I spun a center main and had to get her linedbored and after that we had to file the back side of the cam and crank gear because they were closer. Who knows what the compression is now. This was all done before I got the exta hp.

"Disconnect the link from the carb to the gov arm at the arm."
IMPORTANT, if you try to "tweak" without this step and "opps" you will break the end off your throttle shaft and will ruin your whole weekend when no parts or welder are available to repair to play with the tractor in the field and pull. |

Two large crescent wrenches work well to adjust the governor arm. Have a helper hold the governor side while you bend the other side.
