Detectives recover more stolen tractors as probe widenshttp://argus-press.com/news/community/shiawassee_area/article_8d882bec-b69e-11df-a37f-001cc4c03286.html?photo=By GARY RIDLEY, Argus-Press Staff Writer | 0 comments SHIAWASSEE COUNTY — The size and scope of an investigation headed by the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office into stolen lawncare equipment continues to grow as the theft ring has now been connected to three states. Last week, two Taylor men were arrested after deputies accused them of organizing a theft ring operating from the Upper Peninsula to Metro Detroit. However, the sheriff’s office is now confirming that the theft ring expanded into Ohio and Wisconsin as its investigation continues. The sheriff’s office also confirmed the investigation has recovered approximately another $100,000 in stolen property. Authorities have connected about $186,000 in stolen goods to the suspects. ... According to the sheriff’s office, the continued investigation led detectives to subjects in Lapeer, Richmond, Chesterfield and Columbus, as well as in Toledo, Ohio, Tuesday. ... Authorities also seized more than 1,000 Vicodin pills, marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms and $17,500 in cash. Last week’s bust in Taylor yielded three Kubota zero-turn mowers valued at approximately $24,000; one Grasshopper zero-turn mower valued at $8,000; two Cub Cadet zero-turn mowers valued at $12,000; one Classic 28 foot-long enclosed trailer valued at $10,000; one Honda all terrain vehicle valued at $8,000; three log splitters valued at $4,500; one Kubota RTV valued at $10,000; and seven Mercury and Tohatsu boat motors valued at $10,000. Whoops - right in my back yard - but I swear - the Vicodin wasn't mine! |

Yes, that's going on around here too. It's just a tragedy. Michigan is the worst hit economically and you would think people would be have better - not worse - but not so, it seems. What galls me - is that in order for this stuff to get scrapped, whether its air con units or tractors - it has to be sold to scrap dealers. And yet year after year, those dealers get a free pass from the poh-leece. |

As bad as it is now , wish theywould hang a few as a example to the rest.
A few years back had the dock plate stolen several times , and recovered from scrap dealer, had to buy it back and they never found the guys who sold it .. Talk about a double ripoff. Had it chained to post, bolt cutters and truck , gone in a flash. Video recording of their work , and still locals could not find them

FWIW, if you sell scrap in Indiana, you maybe asked to present a state issued ID. That became law last year. Not all of the scrap buyers require it, but I'm told that the big city buyers do.

Scrap Dealer Here in Lafayette indiana does a good job and works with the police. They have caught/turned in several individuals selling stolen metal. They do require ID and they video everyone going on/off the scales.
