Hello again, in case no one remembers me I am the poor sap that had half his G engine stolen.
I am going to be putting the G back together this weekend and had a question about the cylinder head bolts and studs. Since all my bolts were also stolen I need to replace them all.
Can I just use regular grade 5 bolts and washers that are the same length?
For some odd reason I was thinking that the washers were copper to seal coolant. Maybe I am just dreaming but I thought I'd ask before I found out the hard way.
I have a sample bolt that a friend of mine gave me and I can match it up with the stuff from the bolt bin at work.
Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. I made it out to Roeters Farm Equipment in Grant, Michigan and got all the pieces I couldnt source locally. What a sight that place was. I think they had 10 of everything there!

My parts book says,
part # 058793 qty. 6 Capscrew, special (long) with # 911423 Washer, (plain) part # 013059 qty. 10 Capscrew, special (short) with # 911423 Washer, (plain) part # 800259 qty. 4 Stud, front & rear with # 911423 Washer, plain # 904206 Lockwasher, # 910324 Nut I think they are steel washers but have a small OD. The OD is about the same as the OD of the hex heads point to point. Good Luck, Dusty

I noticed the "different length" head bolts in the parts book and asked about it on this forum some time ago. I've taken apart 3 G engines and, in all of them, the head bolts were all the same length. My recollection is that no one that responded to my forum query had ever seen different length head bolts either.
Best regards,

I just checked my Allis-Chalmers Standard Parts Catalog and it describes the washer (Part # 911423) as Steel; Inside Diameter - 3/8; Outside Diameter - 3/4; 16 Gage [.065] Thickness.

Just wanted to add that I remember your posting about that tractor getting ripped while at your place of work. You truly have my sympathy. Best Wishes in getting it finished this time! |

I found this site useful
http://www.wisconsinmotors.com/partc/con_engines/L-Head_Overhaul.pdf search for continental engine N62 head bolts. The same engine was used in many applications. Some parts do not interchange, but most inards do. |
