Calvin They recently built a couple like that one in a nearby water district. They built the "trunk" then built the large round part on the ground around the main trunk. Then one day a large crane lifted it straight up in place.Pretty naet how they did that.Do you build tanks like the one shown?I would love to see some pics.

That has quite a base on it. What amount of water do todays newer tanks hold? I remember older ones holding 45,000 - 65,000 gallons.

Most new elevated water tanks will hold from 250.000 to 1.5 million gallons. The water is only in the top part. The height of the concrete pedestal is determined by the desired water pressure. The height of the tank side wall is determined by the amount of water in the operating range. Normally the tank is 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of the concrete. The pedestal only contains 3 pipes and a ladder. If you look closely at the picture you will see little notches where the tank and the concrete meet. The tank is built on the ground and when it is finished it's pulled to the top with strand jacks. There is a jack at each notch and each notch represents about 5 tons of tank weight. A tank is usually pulled in less than a day. We build the concrete pedestals in Canada for one of the major tank contractors. Pedestals are simple to build with not much reinforcing steel.
