This is what we call a bean buggy in MN.   vs. a bean bar that mounts to the front of a tractor on which 4 people ride to spray roundup on the weeds in the soybeans.  The bean buggy was a one man operation that could be used after the kids left home and help was harder to come by. 
 
 
Were similar units used on tobacco farms?

I have not seen a rig like that in a tobacco patch. Most guys have 12 to 14 rows in strips and use a side boom sprayer that will get 6 to 7 rows from a three point hitch. Most now that still grow it have several more acres and use High Boy boom sprayers. Around here they are the 3 wheel type and they are JD or Hahn which is orange like AC. They drop the sticks with the High Boys too.
