 Topic: Found a U tonite, what's it worth?

I went to go look at bthe baler tonite and in the basement of the barn is an Allis Chalmers U. After looking at Norm Swinfords' book and some other pictures, it is a later U with rubber tires. Has the jar style cleaner on the top, all of the carb, manifold etc was on the left side of the engine, so I think it is the AC engine, not the Continental, correct? Had belt pulley on the right side. Don't know anything about U's or how rare they are, or what they are worth, but would like to get this one.
So what would this thing be worth, tin looks good, looks to be complete, engine is loose. Needs front tires for sure, rear tires hold air but are old and worn. Has a seat on the back that looks like the monroe seats on a WC with a shock on the very back, but had a padded seat which the covers are long gone. Paint is all but gone on it, so would need alot of work. Radiator looks to be in good shape from what I can see.
Also, where do you find the serial number on a U, so I can find out what year it is, when I go back and look at it. Does anyone have some pictures of any U's that are restored so I have something to compare to to see if anything is missing. Thanks for the help.

Chuck, go to tractor pics and check out the pics there. Around here they would run from $500 to $3000. Kinda depends who wants it and what kinda shape it is really in.

Serial number is on the flat area on the left side of the rear housing to the left of the PTO. or PTO outlet cover if no PTO is fitted.

One realy can not put a price on things that you can not look over or see a bunch of pictures of it and have a guy that is looking at it answer ?'s about the tractor, that is standing aside the tractor ,Most of the time you do not want the guy selling the tractor to answer ?'s if he dose not know much about these older boys.
Most people buy these for a good low price then only to find later that the parts missing are the hard ones to find or high dollar parts.Then on the other hand you sometimes come across a deal of your life time. Just my 3 cents today.

Chuck- it really doesn't matter what unknown conditions may be hiding in there, or what kind of work or dollar figure is involved, you must add this U to your collection, it's a simple fact of your mental and medical condition... part of the treatment for that condition, is to maintain the magnetic stability of your environment through collection diversity.
My rule: Engines that turn, will run, and everything else is just details... just don't stand downwind of my '48 B when it's idling, unless you like wearing polka-dots.
If you get it, and decide you simply can't give it a loving home, I'll meet 'ya halfway.

I know what you mean Fred. I wanted to take some pictures of it, but the guy that owned it didn't seem too keen on it last night. I have to go back this weekend for the baler and I will work on him then and see what happens. By no means do I need another project, but you don't find a U every day. Even if it's not the most rare, it's still unique in its own way.

If you get the U you won't regret it. I can't put a price on your find but we bought a non-running 36 for 2500, put fresh gas in it and it has run great since. On the other hand we gave 400 for a 37 parts tractor and got lots of goodies. A starter makes if worth more as does a pto, belt pulley, rear weights, front spokes, condition or rear rims(good ones are rare). Serial # 12001 and up will have the 318 cid engine.Good luck with you find. Here's a couple of pictures of our 37.

Thanks for the pics and info Leon. Ih had front and rear spoke rims on it, starter tank was all there, and a belt pulley. Also had a jar style precleaner on the air cleaner tube. No starter on it. Back of it was really tight to the rear wall but I didn't see a pto on it.

If it has flat spokes on the rear that would be a steel wheel that has been cut down for rubber tires. Look closely you should see where they were welded to the rim.
