Carl,
There is a snap ring keeping the bull gear on the axle. You have to remove that before the axle will slide out. Seal and outer bearing will stay on the axle. Snap ring is located on the inner side of the final drive.
To take the main pinion shaft out the entire final has to be removed from the diff. housing. Brake drum has to be removed before it can be disassembled. Edited by Jeff(WD45-SATX-TN) - 08 Jun 2010 at 2:36pm |

Carl,
I just took mine apart a couple weeks ago. Once the snap ring is removed from the axle, place the bolt back into the end of the axle. It took a few blows with a soft hammer to get mine moving. ***Make sure you support the bull gear. I used a floor jack to support that weight before I began trying to remove the axle, just do not put the assembly into a bind with to much support. Once lightly supported, you can leave that bolt out about 1/4" or so and give it a few good hits. After it beings to move, remove the bolt completely. It may take some movements back and forth. I used a wedge between the flange and housing. Some light taps and it all started to come out. Do not block the seal. That outer seal and bearing will most likely come out with the axle.

ok, thats what i thought, just figured i better double check. all i went in there for was the axel seals, well, im glad im in there because i found a bad bearing, which rounded off the corners of the bull gear. so i suppose i better replace all the bearings..

I just purchased everything to rebuild the lower portion. Was $138.00 with shipping, inner and out bearings, bearing cups, snap ring, bull gear bushing, seal, shims, and included pan gasket. Private message me with your e-mail and I will send you a list of parts and the supplier.
