I think I messed up taking the pump off without the marks in the window being lined up so now that I have it back on it won't start. Is there a way I can line up the marks, pull the pump and then set the engine on TDC?

I don't know how to do it on a 185, but when I pulled the pump off on my HD3 there were timing marks in the window on the pump and the only way to get it lined up perfect was to pull the injectors out so there was no compression and then I used a push button switch and hooked it up to bump the starter over in small increments, like one would do to set valves all the time on a racecar engine. I then got it bumped over to where the timing marks lined up perfect, pulled the pump, had it fixed, and then put it back on without turning the engine over. Worked perfect. When I tried to do it with the injectors in, it would go past the timing marks each time because it got right to the point where it was supposed to fire, just past TDC.

Your best bet is to pull the injector pump off, take out no. 1 injector , clean the balancer on the front to find the timing numbers ; then put a 1 5-16 wrench on the front crank bolt and slowly turn over the motor, you will be able to feel air come out of the injector hole on the no. 1 compression stroke ; I use a 6011 electrode to find exactly TDC , when the electrode starts back down ; stop; now look for the numbers on the balancer they should be close ; if the numbers are on the back side of the balancer ; turn it over to get the numbers to the front or to the notch or pin on the timing gear cover ; 185,s are at 24 deg. TDC ; ON THE INJECTOR PUMP SHAFT MAKE SURE THE DOT matches the dot inside the pump - on top or bottom- you can slide the pump on or I take the shaft out of the timing gear slide it in, then put it back on the gear ; if your on 24,and the dots are right , you should be really close on the pump timing marks , just turn the pump to get perfect ; theres no use to try to start it if the timings off, your wasting time, fuel, and prolly either, when you get it on , crack the lines at the bottom of the injectors , get fuel there, tighten them up a she should start ; Good luck !!

You can also pull the valve cover to check when both valves on number 1 are closed, or pull the plate in front of the hydraulic pump to find the punch mark on the cam gear, and knowing when you see it in that window where the can gear meshes with the hydraulic gear, you are about 1 revolution off.

I'll really show my lack of knowledge here but when Doug is talking about the balancer what am I looking for where?

There should be numbers that are stamped into the outer diameter of the balancer that line up with a pointer on the front timing cover on the same side as the injection pump. It will be a triangular protrusion that is pretty close to the outer diameter of the balancer at about the 10 or 11 o'clock position if you were facing the front of the engine looking at it. That is where it is on the 301 in my 7000, should be the same for the 185.

Look at the inj pump drive shaft....it has a "dot" on one side of the flat tang. Look inside the inj pump...it also has a "dot" on one side of the socket for the drive tang to engage in. Rotate the pump with a big flat blade screwdriver to make it line up with the pump driveshaft....it has to be "dot" to "dot" or you'll be 180 degrees off. TDC isn't what you look for anyway....pump would be timed at anywhere from 18 to 24 degrees BTDC depending on what pump p/n it is.

Be careful not to do any damage to the bronze bushing inside the pump when removing/installing and also when lining up the dots.
