Need to replace a piston in my wide front Series I (1958) D17D with power steering. The I&T manual requires a front end split to remove the oil pan. Are there any other technicques that could also be used to remove/replace the oil pan?

best I can remember the front end will come out if the rear A frame is dropped and the splined steering arm is taken off. Front end is pegged into the cast housing. There is an allen bolt from the top down on the right hand front side just back from the front that is easy to miss when removing pan on some models. Again this is from memory.

Everything that I Have read says to remove front end..in order to remove the allen head bolts I dont see any other way around it..

The bolts in the front of the pan go through the timing cover. I don't see how you're going to get to them with the pedestal still on the tractor.

I agree. Pull the axle. It is very easy to do and will give you great access.

Thanks Guys for the feedback. Did not expect to pull the pan without splitting the front end; however, the wealth of experience here has provided easier R&R methods in the past.

I tried everything to get the pan off my 1958 D17D without taking the front end off, and there is no way it will happen. The front end MUST come off.
