ok i posted a picture of a d-15 the other day and some questions come up about the serial number which i could not find. Some suggested the tractor might have a "fever" but after some close observation i have determined that the design of the tractor with the battery box placement being right over the serial number almost is not a good thing over a period of 40+ years seems the battery had leaked acid some time back then and aided the corrosion and rust process ...Hence , no serial number so if somebody could please tell me some distinguishing factors that only a d-15 might have to help identify the size of the tractor would very much appreciated..thank you

Recently there have been posts about the WD45 having the serial number stamped on the hydraulic pump. I wonder if the D series tractors had it stamped somewhere else too.

jon, does it have oil bath air filter or dry element? Early D15 had the oil bath, D15 series 2 had the dry air filter. There may be a serial number on the engine itself. If you can find that, I can check it against my D15 series 2 and see if it is younger or older. Are you sure battery acid took it off? My battery is on the right and the serial number is on the left. I will go out and take a picture of where my serial number is.

Here is a picture of mine. After looking at where the battery is, I can see how the acid could eat it away.

To determine if it is a D-15 drain the gas tank and fill it. If it is full with 16 gallons it is probably a D-15.
D-10, D-12 and D14's could not hold 16 gallons and the D-17 would take 19 gallons to fill it.
Also the D-10, D12 and D-14 gas tanks will not mount on a D-15 without rear mount modifications. Edited by Jeff Z. NY - 03 Apr 2010 at 1:47pm |

D15 ll, the engine ser.# should start with 160-.
Both 14 & 15 had 26in. rear rubber and crooked gearshift. believe the 17 had 28in rubber and straight gearshift D15 had a thumb guard on the PD lever. 15 ll had fender lights, 14 & early 15 lights on the grill. |

Charlie: The D-series hydraulic pumps do have serial numbers, but they are specific to the pump, and would be difficult to date unless someone has access to a pump serial number list. Engines also have serial numbers stamped on them. The 149 and 160 CID engines are stamped on the left side, just to the rear of the carburetor. |
