 Topic: WD clutch help

I have a 48 WD with the hand clutch disengaged i can not put the tractor in to gear. When i push the foot clutch in i can put the tractor in gear and the tractor will go when released dose not matter what pisiton the hand clutch is in. which clutch do i need to be looking at? Both cluchtes seem to have plenty of disc left. Thanks for any help.

ac-wd, I have never been into the WD hand clutch, but the symptoms you describe suggest that the foot clutch is fine and that the hand clutch is not. Almost sounds like the handle isn't connected to the clutch itself since the tractor functions with the hand clutch handle in any position.

your discs in the hand clutch pack are too tight, or stuck together from sitting with the hand lever pulled back. Thick (cold or dirty) oil can cause them to drag. Start it up. Put it in second gear with the hand clutch forward all the way.Let the foot clutch out with your foot on the brakes. It should drag some, then slip. There are little shims in the hand clutch pack that hold the discs apart while the hand lever is disengaged. You may need to clean the discs and/or add a couple of shims. Buy a manual, they are worth their weight in gold.

A couple of things to check for you. First, the hand clutch lever should snap in and out. If it doesn't and doesn't slip under load, I would pull the cover off under the battery verify that the yoke and the set screw holding it to the shaft are good. I also had a pin fall out of one of the shift levers and this wouldn't allow the clutch to disengage.

check the clucth pack to see if the snapring on themain shaft is still on i had that problom with my wd when you disengage it travels to far forword and ingages the clutch going to the front try to hold the clutch handle in the middle and see if it will work or disengage hope this will help dudley

You are not to shift gears with the hand clutch. When it is cold it will drag and put a load on the gearbox. Depress the foot clutch and put it into 2nd or 3rd gear and with the hand clutch engaged and the brakes full on, let out the foot clutch. the brakes should hold the tractor from moving forward. with the brakes off it is normal for the tractor to creep with the hand clutch engaged.
