Did all D17 series IV come with six bolt hubs or did some come with five bolt hubs? And between the two different style hubs, is the spindle different for each one, or could you put a 6 bolt hub on a tractor that had a 5 bolt hub and spindle on before? Thanks for the help. |

I think all SIV came with 6 bolt. I never saw 5 on SIV. The 5 bolt and 6 bolt hubs on the 17's I believe are different.

Series IV D-17's came both ways with 5 bolt hub or 6 bolt hubs. Most later ones had 6 bolt hubs. They show a different in length on the spindles according to a serial number break.

Yes, earlier Series IV's came with 5 bolt hubs. I have one that's SN 80314 making it a late 1965 with 5 bolt hubs. It also had the new AC triangle decal on the seat back BUT the old starburst logo on the hood front & steering wheel center. And yes the spindles are different as Matt points out. I tried to replace my spindles in 2005 when doing some other work on my tractor and the replacement ones sold to me were too long. I had to return them and take bad one to a machine shop to fix it instead. Mike

You could buy a D17 IV with either 5or 6 bolt hubs. I have a series IV #87771 with 5-bolt hubs. I believe you could order them either way clear to the end of production. The spindles are different. The diameter of the spndle is larger on the 6-bolt and takes a different inside bearing.

i have a D-17IV diesel serial 83780D with 6 bolt rims. My late D-15 II also has 6 bolt rims. I think that they likely changed suppliers in 1966 and changed to 6 bolt. My price books don't offer the option of ordering a 5 or 6 bolt wheel.

general rule D17s with the old AC logo had 5 bolt front hubs, D17s with the new AC logo had the 6 bolt hubs. Like I said general rule not law! |

My 1966 D17 IV gas serial #82024 is five bolt. 1966 D17 IV diesel serial #84859 is six bolt. Same year, but the diesel is a later serial number. Have to go check the logos on them, but thought both had the old one.

My D17 SIV is 83811 and has 5 bolt hubs and the old diamond logos; that would narrow the gap in Dave's range. Michael

Michael, I think that someone must have been messing with your D-17. The new triangle logos were 1965 for sure and maybe late 64. Your serial number would make it a 1966 with a later serial number then mine with the 6 bolt hubs and triangle logos. There was a discussion on here on this subject several months ago. I thought we had it narrowed to the change over being in the mid 83,000 serial number range. the parts book does not say anything. |

Well, I went out and looked. Both of mine have the new logos. So, where does that put us?

Dave - new logos both seat back decal and steering wheel/hood emblems? Like I said, mine at 80314 had the triangle decal on the seat back but the old emblems on the steering & hood. Like lots of other things AC did, I'm sure they used up the stock of the more expensive to make metal emblems but switched over the decals sooner either because the ran out of the old or it was cheap enough to switch. Yeah, new logos all around. I know the gas has been repainted before I got it, so could have been some switching of logos, but the desiel is original I think, and the later serial #. Interesting how these things happen! I remember when this discussion was on here before, but don't recall where it ended up.

My 1966 D 17 #83999 had the 5 bolt hubs when I purchased it. I did change it over to 6 bolt hubs, kept the same spindles, just different brgs. HTH, Mike

Mine has 5 bolt hubs, and old logo's all around. Serial number 78403. I don't think that helps any but thought I'd throw it in there anyway.

Dad's series IV is 83083 and has new logos all around, but 5 bolt hubs. You can put 6 bolt hubs on the old spindles, just need to get different bearings.
