looks like maybe a peat bog my grandpa lived up over my mauston and Tomah and for years did moss.... I have walked on ground in October grouse hunting and it was like walking on a water bed.... too grassy to be a cranberry bog I think.....

I think a decent sized cat or two might of been able to grab her but its totalled anyway might as well bust it up now lets see what the EPA does.... There was a barn fire out here last year the FF put tons of water on her and the run off got into a little creek and like 5 miles down stream a few fish died the EPA fined the farmer who lost the farm like 40K I tell you what If I ever had a barn fire and it was an obvious loss Id say hey fellers let it just go I dont want to get hit with the 40K fine....

The John Deere was pulling a groomer for snowmobile trails. Burnett County begins about 10 miles north of me.

Burnett county or burnett city by the horicon marsh? I know that other snowmobile clubs that have had groomers break thru the ice or break thru on bridges try to get a track hoe or something to lift them out, at least with the track hoe and an experienced operator they canusually get themselves out of trouble.

That boys is/was the pride of the club. they bought it to take the place of their old one that had float tires on it as I understand.
RFDeere, This things got tracks on all four corners. Its also has a winch on the frontend which ain't much good under water.
One of the trails runs half mile away from me. Fella sits in it with his coffee cup and shirt sleeves At least the one day I seen him. The tracked tractor pulls a groomer that blades the snow one way and then the other and levels the trails out.
No bridge, they were thinking the ground was frozen hard enough to go across. Wrong.
The area is east of Siren Wi. out on Lind Rd. the ground is bog / floating tamarck swamp type. wet fall didn't help.
Local paper showed one picture and had one paragraph under it.
DanWi. "with the track hoe and an experienced operator they can usually get themselves out of trouble" Yes, a very savvey experianced operator in tough conditions.
(My personal thoughts, -- If you had some old timers out there to take this thing out, it would have still been in one piece. But todays thinkers seem not to have the savvy to do anything but with brut force and what ever it takes without care of what happens,) at least seems like it from time to time.
Couple possible alternative methods - They needed some long timbers and a stick of dynamite and a stout chain with a good cat on the end. Used the track hoe to make a ramp in the muck, shove the timbers in with the hoe and then apply the power and set the charge off under the tractor. The charge would relieve the suction between the tractor and mud and it would have almost jumped out of the hole from the tension on the chain. That is one method. The other method would have been to cut three or four trees and set up a tripod over the stuck pig and then winched that tractor out of the mud, even if they pulled it out and hung it by the drawbar. But that would have been to slow for them. At least it looks like they threw down straw to keep it from freezing in.
Maybe they should have osha come in and see what can be made safer for the next time? Maybe they need couple tubes on each side of unit that would extend say 15 feet front wards and backwards to rest on if they break thru with the wheels/tracks. Would have saved them here.
Can somebody patent that idea for me? LOL
Yup, that Deere took a swim and died right there.

Looks like it has tracks on both the front and back axles. Lots of parts to salvage. I wonder how fast it sank? Might have been an interesting ride.

Todd, thats one of those things, you gotta do what you gotta do. It appears they already had a chain hooked to the rear end of tractor
Reminds me of a time I crossed a river while coming home from hunting and my rifle snagged a limb on the tree I was crossing on and sling broke and into the water it went. I stripped off my coat, hat, shirt and undershirt and hooked a leg around a limb and went head first into the water. I was able to grab my rifle and then had to get back out. The rifle had about an inch of ice on all the metal parts. I put my already cold clothes back on, (did a quick wipe down with tshirt) and flipped the hood over over my head. Thank goodness it had the hood on it. and walked on home. Temp gauge was reading -5. (Don't think I would have done that if I had known nhow cold it really was.) I took the rifle apart to dry out and I believe it was so cold that it just iced up on the outside instantly because the bullets and magazine were still dry on the inside.

Sounds like they weren't to swiff in removing it! Shame to destory it. Right tool for the job would have saved time and many dollars! Glade i wasn't driving it!

I thought that last picture was funny where they had a pickup with winch trying to pull it out. That truck would pull in two before budging that tractor. They needed a CAT or an HD5.

Real large equipment is not necessary for something like this. I have removed a couple log skidders from similar situations...use your head is the best solution...you will get wet cold hooking on to it in the right place for sure but they have access here to a warm vehicle to dry out in. Lie has been suggested, get hooked on and get good tension on your cable/chain...get some piling/planking down under it and dig an escape ramp and I am sure it would come out without damage...MOST IMPORTANT TAKE YOUR TIME DOING IT!

DD, that is where your wrong, that thing would go across open water, it floated. and would have been somewhat on top in that swamp too. But the way I understand it, they wore the ribbings off the drum in a short order, and slid like anything else on ice and had no power on abrasive surfaces since it consumed so much to turn the drums.
Video clip, I got to see up to the point of the fordson turning on ice, then the old Win '98 started acting up so didn't get to see the rest of it, Plus it would have taken looong time to download the rest thru this smoke signal and telegraph internet connection I have here. Thanks, JC
