Has anyone ever seen a D17 pulling a 5 bottom plow and what type of soil ?  I can't imagine it being efficient at all.

Heres a funny story about that same topic . When I was like 12yrs old I worked for my Uncles neighbor who had 2 D-17's a series 1 the other a 3, I never understood the concept of the snap coupler hitch,my grandpa had JD tractors that had 3 points. The neighbor behind us in town ,his  Dad use to be a Case dealer and he told me from the time I was 5 that when they had plow days on there farm that the local Allis Chalmers dealer would bring out a WD-45 with 3 bottoms behind it but it couldnt pull it would just stand up or spin because it was such a light tractor. Well anyways when George was explaining to me the concept of the snap coupler he told me when he bought the original 17 he traded in his Dads "big" W6 on it, and his Dad who was a big IH man was so pissed off at him for trading that big W6 on a G#*D #m Allis Chalmers, when spring came he hooked on his plow 2-14 trailer and set to plowing with his Dad looking on and he couldnt pull the plow, his Dad went balistic for trading and when they went in for lunch George called the local Allis Chalmers dealer and complained that he couldnt pull his plow, the salesman told him to come up and get an Allis 3-16 snap coupler plow, George told him if I cant pull 2 how am I gonna pull 3? The sales man said just come and get it. So George hightailed it about 3 miles to town hooked up to the 3-16 snap and ran home before his Dad woke up from his noon nap. George said when he dropped that 3-16 in the ground the 17 never looked back didnt care if you were going straight up a hill or through a swamp hole she just kept plowing and his Dad never said another word about that "little" 17. Anyway George went on to explain how that snap coupler worked and that the harder the plow pulled the harder the tractor was sucked to the ground, and if set right was almost impossible to lift the front wheels off the ground, when I told him what our neighbor had told me about the plowing meets at there farm, George said well that guys full of s*#t with a snap coupler and traction booster it wouldnt happen. Well about 2 years after George bought that plow he was at a wedding with his brother in law and the usual bragging that follows a certain amount of beer drinking ensued. George bragging about his D-17 told his brother inlaw that his 17 had so much power he knows he could pull 4 bottoms like nothing, Mucks, his brother in law, said if Georges 17 could pull 4 his 17 could pull 5, George told him he was nuts and bet him $50 that it couldnt be done. So half drunk they went to mucks farm drove his 17 10 miles to town hooked on to a 5-16 snap coupler at the AC dealer drove back to his farm, now remember this is like 10 at night, George said he dropped that plow in the ground the govenor snapped and that ole 17 never looked back. Well fast forward to 1989 when my Grandpa died, the Allis Dealer came to the wake, out in the lobby I was chatting to him about my favorite subject.............Allis Chalmers......... and I asked him about that story George had told me years ago about Mucks pulling 5 bottoms with a 17, he said that was the Gods honest truth, that next Monday they sold the plow to Mucks and he plowed all his land with it for years till they bought a 190XT and that the plow was still behind his barn tipped over with the bottoms sticking straight up, a few months later me and a friend went looking and sure enough there it was rolled over with 5 bottoms sticking straight up.Now fast forward another 10 years and a good frind of mine bought a d-17 series 4 on an estate sale and it came with 3-16 snap plow, when he brought it home he pulled into a gas station for fuel and some John Deere guys came in checking out his 17 they told him to come and partisipate in there 2 cylinder clubs plow day the following weekend, so he dropped the 17 off my me and asked if I could put new belts, muffler and change the fluids in this tractor for him he wanted to take it to the JD clubs plowing meet. I told Chuck you know why they want you to come and plow dont you? He said no why, I told him they think that there going to make you out the fool plowing with 720-730 80- 830 pulling plows and that little AC would look piful among the "big Dogs". Well Chuck said I wont go than, and I said no go to it because the fool here would be the guys driving the JD's I said we will get the tractor tuned up and hook the plow to it and get it set for this weekend, he had about a 10acre field on there farm with alfalfa sod that we could plow and get it set. After fixing the tractor and changing the fluids we headed down to his farm to limber up the 17 for the big weekend, Chuck went home to get a 45 pulling a drag to level off what we plowed. I went  down in that field and put the 17 in 2nd gear lo and made a round to get the bottoms shined and to start to set the plow it was playing with it in red clay so I shifted to the high side continued to plow and set the plow getting the traction booster working right after getting the plow working good plowing 8in deep I shifted to 3rd lo still played with it so I shoved the PD to the high side and she was walking but still not a real heavy load, so just for the hell of it I tried 4th pulled the PD into lo the govenor snapped and 3-16 8in deep red clay in the summer that 17 was plowing, now it was working and the front end was just floating the first furrow was flying 3ft at that speed but that 17 was still doing it, and the heat was starting to build, I shifted back to 3rd lo which is plenty fast but I just wanted to prove to myself what I already knew that a D-17 was no tractor to mess with!!!! Chuck the guy that owned the tractor eventually came down with his 45 and he asked me what gear he could plow in this weekend at the plow meet, I said any gear you want Chuck laughed and siad you cant plow in any gear you want, I said like hell you cant jump on so with him ridding on the fender I dropped the plow in ground 3rd lo started plowing throttled her up shoved the PDinto high and chuck was all smiles, that I pushed in the clutch Chuck asked what I was doing I said going to 4th . Aw Bull s**t you cant plow in 4th he said as I pulled the PD in lo and the govenor snapped and away we went. He was so proud of that 17 I thought his face was gonna break from the smile. So in a  quicker reponce to your question Yes it can be done and quite efficiently. Never never underestimate the power of a 17.
