Looking at a 4W 305 to buy and use on the farm, Would restore over time but will use on the farm this spring, I have never been around 1, 2 Questions: Do they have shift on the go? 2nd, would I be satified with the horsepower of the tractor? We will pull a 30 ft. Salford tool this spring with this tractor if we buy it.

Howdy Steve,
I pull a 22 foot AC 2600 primary disk with 24 inch blades with my 4w305. It just plays with it! Don't matter the gear up to a point. Its the biggest thing I got. I am looking for a AC 1500 13 tooth mini till but, not found one yet. You are should welcome to come take in some fun when it warms up here.

Yes, the 4w305 has a Power director. The shift is approx. 25% faster in HI side, then back to direct, just like other Allis tractors were.

I have not seen a Salford tool (deep tillage). But I pull a 9 shank krause (22.5 feet) with the winged points, with my 4w305. It pulls it OK till I run uphill in some of this redland that has been in no-till for years, then I have to raise the plow up a little till it gets passed the hard spot, or it will want to spin alittle, but the the engine still don't know its back there, then I lower it back down and keep going. I had thought about pulling two shanks off the plow till I used it and seen it would pull it alright. Only thing is my 4w305 has the 400hp Cummins in it, but I never run the engine at the max. rpms. I think the Allis engine with 305hp will preform for you alright with the HP/weight ratio of the tractor.

The 30 ft Salford tool, for those who don't know is a minimium tillage too, It has 60 no till coulters, spring tooth harrow and rolling basket, it is a high speed tool, need to pull it around 8 MPH. Pulled it last year with a Versatile 936. I've had several calls this morning saying power will not be an issue, proper weight, and drive line will be the major concerns. If anyone has anything I should be aware of please feel free to tell me. Versatile handled it very well, no on the go shifting makes it more difficult turning on the ends or crossing a waterway, thats why I need to know about the shift on the go.

I think you should be alright then. I was not sure if the Salford was a deep tillage tool. Tires and added weight should make a differance in slippage if it that does become a problem. The 4w305 to my knowage had no power shift. But like Jerry said it does have the eleltric hi/low on the go shift. If you do try to change gears on the go while pulling a load it will stop in its tracks when you hit the clutch.
