You know,,,I can't speak for the "D" series,,or possably other AC tractors, but as I was pushing snow yersterday with my WD right in the middle of down town Terre Haute, I got to thinking,,(cause my brain was about the only thing that hadn't froze on my body yet),,,MAN I sure love the sound of this little 4 cylinder engine workin' hard!
I'd hit the big pile of snow I made at the end of the parking lot that I was clearing and that ole' govener would kick in and the back tires would dig in and the snow pile would move and I know I had a big grin as the old 1953 machine showd the snow pile it was there to do business!
I don't know,,,maybe sounds corny but I sure enjoy my WD, even if it's 15 degrees outside and I COULD be doing something warm inside the house!
I DO have to take some shimm's out of my hand clutch though,,she's slippin a little bit!

I have to agree. Course I'd say about the same about any orange tractor...AC that is. We had some D-14 and D-17 too and they sounded good too. :)  :)

Forgot to mention the 45 that I now have that does not do much work,,,some bush hogging and blade work along with odds and ends.

Yeah,,that's one thing I really enjoy at Dale Haymakers show is being surrounded by orange and no one there is just letting there tractor sit!
At any given time there are tractors moving around!
I'm sure other shows do this too, but Dale's place is special to me for several reasons!

They have sound of they're own for sure.   Also really like the sound of my D15 II with the oval muffler, when it's pulling.

Remember pulling loaded gravity wagons with the WD45 up the hill to the house in the dark. There would be a little flame coming out the top of the exhaust and the top of the muffler cherry red. That was a thrill for a 15 year old!

I'm with you guys on the bark of a WD/WD45 under a load.
As a kid plowing with a WD45 and a #53 plow  rolling 6" + of soil over after dark there was a two" flame coming out the muffler under a load . You need a Nelson muffler to make the right sound!

In their day the WD/WD45 was the hotest thing going. There is not a better sound than the governor opening up on that engine and going to work.

LarryWC:  Ive been using the 17 and SC blade to clear snow for me and my 2 closest neighbors the last few weeks.  I'm out on Old Maple Ave TH, Ind.  Love doing it and after putting the PVC pipe on the blade I'm not scraping the blacktop sealer off the drive ways .  40 didn't last and I went to schedual 80 and it seems to be holding up better.
While my daughter and son-in-law were here on our first January snow their 4 year old saw me backfire the 17 in the dark for him to see and he asked Mamaw why I was burning my tractor up.  He's a Denver city kid I need to have him with me more.  Love that sound !!!  Jim

One of the things I miss at the carnivals is hearing those governers open on the ferris wheel and other rides. The exhaust fumes even smelled good!

I love the sound of my wd, throttled down, putting along in first gear. Especially backing her into the garage after some hard work. Nothing beats the sound of that exhaust bouncing of the garage door. Its not just you Larry. :)

Now that is what I'm talking about. Dad thinks I've lost my mind because I miss snow plowing all day with the WD45 and Meyer plow or WD with SC blade. The tractors are still in NY with him. I actually could have used them this week in KY. Instead I spent lots of hours running my JD 210 and snowthrower helping neighbors get cleared out. Still fun but not Allis fun.

Growing up on the farm we had Case, Ford, Cockschutt, John Deere, and various other tractors through the years. But like most of you, it was the bark and cackle of the WD45 under load that hooked me as a young boy.  I guess it was that sound that turned my blood Orange.

Nothing I like better than the WC, WD, WD-45 snapping to attention and getting to work.  Without a doubt the best governor system ever with the grunt to back it up.

Later model tractors are great, but there is something special about that W-.
There isn't much a WC can't do.

WD's just do it better.

I too agree with the sound.  One of the sweetest sound I heard was when I returned from basic training, from Ft Lenord Wood, was when  the WD started.  Now, I enjoy the back presure of the 15 going down hill.  The other sound I enjoy is the starter sound and an Ford Y block with duel exaust coming to life.

It's amazing the difference in sound between a Nelson and a Stanley muffler on WD's. Stanleys sound like sh*t, I learned the hard way. Nelsons cost a little more but they give those WD's that sweet sound. By the way, I have a slightly used Stanley for sale-cheap LOL.

can still see the black smoke roll out of the 45D in the waxy black gumbo.you are right the 45 had a sound of its own.them governers sure snapped a lot of shear pins on the hay baler.
