Hello All-

Advice needed..........I'm at a juncture with my D14, it seems the generator is not charging so I need to do some checking to see if the voltage regulator is bad or the generator is bad or something else, but I might be at a point to switch eveything over to a 12V alternator.  I would really like to keep the generator, but I keep hearing that I should switch over, because the generator is not very functional (meaning it takes pretty good rpm's over an "extended period" to get a good charge).  Any thoughts or advice?!
And, what is the typical cost to get a generator back in working order.....Thanks....Troy

I like to keep the generator on my rehabs for the original look, even those I upgrade to 12V neg grd. The CA, D12 and D14 use the same generator that Chevy did and I have been able to get a rebuilt generators and VRs for approx $150. I obtain these items from a generator/starter/alternator rebuild shop; and they setup the VR to the generator to ensure it charges properly during operation. Since most tractors do not have a lot of electrical draw after starting (lites, radios, power windows, fans, etc) a decent generator/VR setup will keep the battery charged up.

I can help you with either Gennie or Alternator service and or wiring system for either which ever you decide. Drop us an e-mail or give a call. Be happy to help you out with information, parts or service. Greg is right on with what he mentioned. Matching the correct VR to the Gennie you're using is as important as purchasing the right shoes to fit yer' feet. The Generator system should work fine for you if you decide to stay with it.

Generators are low charge rate,so to recharge the battery , it has to be on 'all day'
Alternators are high chrage rate,so they recharge the battery very fast.
Both my D-14s have alternators(one Ford, one Chevy).Rebuilding a generator can cost $10-$150,depends on who does what with it(bearings, coils, regulator, etc).Alternators(GM) have everything builtin, cost maybe $25 at a wrecker yard.
It really boils down to 'all original' or 'uptodate', your choice.
