G Valve Seat ?

   I have a 1949 model G that has a chuck of metal missing in the exhaust valve seat of the # 2 cylinder.  Compression on # 1, 3 & 4 cylindersis 95 psig.  30 psig on #2. Have talked with two machine shops I have used in the past for work on CE engines and both have a problem with machining the small diameter valve seat to install a valve seat insert.  They both say a 1 inch insert is the proper size to use, but neither can go below an insert of 1 1/8 inch.  

Can I go with a 1 1/8 OD insert?  Are will this cut into the water channel?  
Any other advise on how to repair a badly chipped valve seat?

	Bob,the G uses a Continental engine. Check out your local industrial engine supplier or a good small engine shop. I think 1" is the same as Kohler. Continental got bought out by Teledyne Wisconsin years back and they were bought by Fugi/Robin which later sold to Subaru I believe. Last I heard they liquidated most of the old stuff and kept Robin. I haven't kept up with dealers,but I'm sure as many Continental and Wisconsin industrial engines that are out there,that someone bought up the pieces. What part of VA are you in. Maybe I can find a dealer in your area. Brett

	Brett, I am just down the road from you in Waynesboro. This G came from the Mrotek sale last year. Just getting around to working on it. It was a running tractor, but one cylinder had extremely low compression. This is my first exposure to a G. Most of my hobby has been directed to B, C and CA models. As for the valve seat, I really need a machine shop that can machine a 1 inch recess in the block for anvalve seat insert. My two "old reliable" shops can not do it unless I spring for a the machine tools to go that small ($100.00 plus)! I am sure there is a shop out there, I just need to find it. 	I have a G (N62) block in my home shop that needs a valve grind. I have not got around to start on it and it will be some time before I do. I checked my valve seat cutters and the smallest cutter is 1 5/16. It could easily be done smaller on a CNC. In the past I have made special valve seats on the lathe. This would not be [inexpensive] to order special steel to make a seat and set up on a CNC to cut the pocket. It would not be rocket science but would take a machinist's time and not many would have the pre hardened steel in stock. The block is cast iron and if you could find a welder that would use a cast iron rod as filler the seat chip could be filled in and recut with standard seat cutters after it was decked.
