I have a noise coming from the hydraulic pump (?)  on my 56 CA.  When the PTO is not engaged I hear a rattling sound or maybe a sound of gears not fully engaging.  When the PTO is engaged I cannot hear the noise.  I did not have this noise until I had the transmission swapped out.  Could the noise be from the hydraulic pump not installed properly or is the pump going out?  Everything operates as it should, just this rattling sound.  Thank you in advance.

If the PTO is not engaged the hyd pump is also disengaged. Sounds like a bad bearing may be.

On the CA, it uses springs under the pumping plungers to return the plungers so they stay in contact with the followers, much like valve springs keep the rockers and lifters against the camshaft. You could have a plunger that has a broken spring so it stays in and the follower could be swinging loosely making the noise. The pump is easy to remove to check it out.

 Brian, if a plunger spring is broken than one would only hear that when the PTO is engaged.
 Mike, since the problem came up after you put in the trans than thats where I'd look. If you are getting the sound when the PTO is not engaged than that means it is not the hyd pump. On a "CA" you must have the PTO engaged for the hyd pump to be powered. The pump is run off the same shaft that powers the PTO. Good Luck & please let was know what you find.

Dennis, I had the same problem with my CA. It depended on weather the tractor was setting level or not if one of the followers would rattle or not.

In your post you said "sounds like gears not engageing". Might try pulling the PTO lever as far back as posible, maybe the shift collar is not disengaging far enough away from the gear. When the pto is not engaged does the pto shaft have a vibration like what your hearing in the pump? As the other guys said when the pto is not engaged the hyd pump is sitting still. If the bearing is going out of the trans output shaft, it might not make noise when the pto collar is slid forward releiving the sideload. Does it make the noise reguardless if the tractor is in gear or idling out of gear. If it makes noise ( by the pump )  while tractor is running, trans out of gear and pto out of gear, it might be the bearing on the end of the trans output shaft or the trans shaft output bearing.
