Seems like I am always in need of a new battery for one of my tractors. I know the biggest problem is that they don't get a whole lot of use. Just wondering what the best thing to do with a battery is over the winter when the tractor will not be run again until spring? Thanks, Eric NY

Eric the best way to keep that battery fresh is to store in a cool dry place and give it a charge on a monthly basis ooor get yourself a trickle charger. To bad we can't just swap the batteries around to equipment that WE ARE USING to keep them fresh.

Completely clean the top. If the battery has any moisture/acid buildup on the top, it will discharge and freeze. Connecting one of those battery maintainers will keep it fully charged.

Most trickle chargers use a fixed current and, given enough time, will boil the battery. As stated above, connect a Battery Tender or similar charger. What you want is a charger that will maintain a constant voltage. I got 8 years out of a motorcycle battery using one of these.

As Flyer said in his post use a Battery Tender not just any old charger.
The best way is to use a Battery Tender Plus.
Leave it on the Battery all winter.
Batteries do not like the cold.
The specific gravity of the acid changes with temperature.
That's why batteries are weak on really cold days.
Keep in a warm area. Normal room temperature.
Besides keeping the battery charged it also maintains the battery.
I have used these for along time and I no longer buy batteries.
Motorcycle battery is going on 6 years.

Charge up the battery and clean it and disconnect the cables so nothing drains it just sitting there |

Battery maintainer is the way to go. I have them on anything that is not used very often. Tractor, truck, 4-wheelers, motorcycles, mowers. Mower is a 2000 model with origional battery. 4-wheelers finally got new batteries after 8 years. They work and make the batteries last much longer. They have a quick disconnect pig-tail so it takes two seconds to connect or disconnect them.

The maintainer that Jeff posted a link to is the cat's meow.
