We're gonna try to rebuild the cylinders on a friend's WD9 Freeman loader.  Any tips or pitfalls to avoid? I 've never tried to disassemble a cylinder, not even a tie-rod type...

tip - I decided it's a bad thing to mix 2 different cylinders even if they almost look alike, it get's kinda jerky when raised all the way.

Actually, I am by no means an expert. Having said that, I have rebuilt a couple of them. Since they are of the displacement type, they are fairly easy. Four bolts to remove the compression flange (you don't need to remove the piston, in fact, I resealed mine without removing the piston/cylinder from the tractor). Use a pick to pry out the old seal. This is probably the hardest part of the job, make sure you get it all.
Some of these cylinders used chevron seals, maybe they all did origionally, I don't know. Finding the chevron seals hard to come by I just use rope seal, pack it in and slowly and evenly snug down the compression flange. HTH

Ours were leaking when we brought it to town.  Dad decided to try power steering sealer, and it worked!  Don't know how bad yours leak, but ours were pretty bad.

If it V ring packing they can be found in any hyd. shop , most are split ring so the ends are cut at angle and lapped over . You can use a larger size and cut it or get a kit that is made for it. Sometimes another ring can be added if the old packing is just compressed to far.
 New style uses a formed 0 ring or a square type ring, be sre to install any spacer ring also to keep the same tolerances .
 A small amount of oil has to be left on shaft so do not overtighten any glands to try to keep shafts completly dry.

I got new chevron packings through work for other cylinders I have rebuilt. I believe the cylinders on a Freeman loader would take the same type packing. I think they are available from Motion Industries. You just have to have the 2 dimensions, outside diameter of the rod, and the inside diameter of the packing retainer. If there are any scratches or gaulding or even heavy rust on the cylinder rods, the seals will not hold up. I made a new rod for the Build a B cylinder and have made rods for others like my Allis remote cylinder. Coke makes a good point too. The packing can not be too tight as to make the rod dry. The packings have to weep enough oil to lubricate the rod and packing.
