 Topic: B Thermostat replacement

I ordered a replacement thermostat for my B. It won't slide all the way into the housing as it catches on the flanged middle of the thermostat stem. The stem is the same length as the original but the new one has the flanged stem halfway down. It's the thermostat listed in the parts books and catalogues. I'll follow this post with a couple photos. What am i doing incorrectly here? Old engine S/N CE 50966 G and replacement engine is S/N CE 33832 G. I don't think old engine is original.

 Old and new thermostats. See the flared end of brass stem that stops it from inserting all the way to the threads.

I believe you refer to that as the 'Temp. Gauge', not a Thermostat.

Duane... i think you PUSH the thermo gauge into the hole until the "brass flange" sets into the pilot hole below the threads in the housing.... Then you PUSH the threaded nut and o-ring DOWN the steel shaft until it hits the brass flange and screw it together.
Hold the gauge and turn the threaded nut by hand.. it should rotate freely and also slide DOWN toward the flange.. If the o-ring is tight, you might put a drop of penetrant onto it and then the threaded nut should move DOWN..

Yea, I just caught that myself a few minutes ago. You beat me to it. Gauge, not thermostat. My mind was elsewhere, sorry.
I’ll give it another try but the gauge was hitting the body solidly and not allowing me to push it down to the threads. I’ll reread your instructions to see if I can make it work. Thanks.

yes, the BRASS should bottom out in the hole... lube the o-ring and threaded nut and PUSH them down toward the housing.

You are spot on. The threaded nut was real tight on the stem. A quick turn with the pliers and it was free to slide down. There was no sign the old gauge threads moved on the stem so I assumed the same with the new one. Thank you.
