I inherited a 60' Gas D17, and was wondering what grade oil do you guys use? 30w? 10w-30? I live in Nebraska it does get cold here and this tractor is used to move snow.  Also what capacity of oil.  Working on getting a shop manual so I don't have to ask dumb questions anymore, just want to have it ready for the snow.

In the winter I put 0W-20 Mobil 1 in the CA so I can get it started. For winter use, I would at least put 5W-30 in it.

I have a Series III D-17 and the operators manual in front of me.  The capacity of the engine oil is listed as 6 quarts.  The recommendations for engine oil are:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lowest Expected Operating Temp          SAE Visc Oil                    Milti-Visc. Oil

90 degrees                                            30w                               10w-30
20 degrees                                            20-20w                          10w-30
Below 20 degrees                                   10w                               10w-30
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope that helps

Tony

I use straight 30w all year 'round.  The Hooter is shedded, but it ain't heated.  Actually one of the mysteries of the world - why is it colder inside a steel building than outside?  Anyway, she started up fine last winter, even when the thermometer inside the shop said -20F.  Had to choke it though.
It has an old block heater with no plug on the end, I have been thinking about putting a plug on it and seeing if it works.  One of these days......
cheers,
Creek
