Cleaned up an oil bath cleaner on a recent purchase...I have never seen oil, dirt, and assorted filth so caked in one....the breather cap and pipe also was at least 1/4 thick ...what conditions could have caused this.....?....I can understand condenstion, but where did all the oil come from???thanks, Mark

That's a good question. The oil bath on my D17D was kinked a little so I took it all apart to straighten it. It had the same issue. The center tube was reduced by about 1/3 due to the greasy dirt in it. I took all of media out and was surprised on how much chaff, dirt, etc was in it.

On intake pipe side may have been just from years of condensation and dust building up.
I think the wools gets that way over time regardless if not cleaned and the later designs were not really designed to clean very well. My WC comes apart to clean but I could not get the 51B type apart. |

The oil bath is a lot more efficent than the paper elements but need maintenance.
If they do not use a pre-cleaner cup for big hunks then the element needs to be cleaned more often. Regular oil change and cleaning of sediment in cup will result in long engine life.
Bought one HD5 that had the cup full of dirt, metal media plugged with 10 pounds of oily dust and the tube just about closed. The pre-filter canister was also full to top.
Guy said it didn't have much power and smoked , funny after cleaning it ran fine

'Paper' filter is the only thing we allow on motors these days. The other types are too dependent on maintenance and air flow rate to work. A gorilla can still mess one up and cause a leak around the media but that 'paper' or media that is used these days is very, very efficient right up to the point it is completely clogged. Otherwise a diesel would eat itself up and cost owner big money. It still happens due to leaks, etc. and everyone gets mad.
