A little over a month ago my oldest uncle who is 74 years old asked me to go look at a tractor with him. He was looking at purchasing a John Deere "A", because that is the tractor he grew up on and plowed corn with. He always tells me the story of running the "A" into the fence at the end of a row because the neighbor girl was out in her bikini. But anyways, we went and looked at the tractor and he ended up buying it. He lives in a pretty well to do sub-division so he rents out a storage space. He hasn't ran a tractor or been involved with agriculture or farm equipment for probably over 55 years, but wanted one. To tow the trailer to shows he just purchased a nice trailer and had it painted JD green and a new F-250 turbo diesel as well and joined the local JD club, just goes to show you farming and these old tractors never really gets out of your blood. He dropped by today to show us the tractor, that is me and then in other pics my Dad driving it. (my uncle is in the green jacket) Edited by Steve-Ohio - 15 Nov 2009 at 6:23pm |

You know, they must have done something right. They sold 269,000 of the model A in all its variations. Had Allis Chalmers been able to sell that many tractors, they'd still be a name to recon with.
Part of their 2 cylinder argument in the 30s was that distillate fuel (as cheap as 8 cents a gallon) burned more efficiently in the large cylinders than it did in the four or six little cylinders of a faster reving "modern" engine. Even burning gasoline, the later two cylinder tractors set high fuel efficiency marks. Gerald J. |

Nice setup, that's why we worked a lifetime. lol Kinda interested in the trailer, guess I've never seen that type as a deck-over with 3 axles.

It's interesting how you're telling your uncle lives in a nice sub division. I remember several years ago when Cheryl Deppe was involved with The Allis Connection. She told a story about visiting someone in the Chicago area and as they were driving around an upscale neighborhood they were pointing out what kind of tractor some of the people living there had.

Great looking tractor. If I were to own any green tractors I would go with an A.
