I have finally finished painting the loader frame. I decided to install each side using new "hardened" 5/8" bolts. I greased the holes with anti-seize and then tried to use my hand ratchet to turn the bolts in. Because it was going so hard I switched to my power wrench which has loads of torque. I mamaged to get one bolt into place but the others will only go so far and then stop. I used my digital caliper to measure the threads and they are .617 - .618" before going into the holes in the frame and are .611 - .614 after having been forced into place and then removed. Question - am I missing something obvious here? The holes in the frame obviously must be slightly smaller than my new bolts? I have normal, softer grade three bolts here and while they are also not an easy go, they will go in and back out. Do I need hardened bolts for this application? Has anyone had this problem before? I just don't want to screw things up. Thanks, Dave

It sounds like you need a tap. Any bolts you forced into the hole, either pitch them or run a chaser die over them. First thing , make sure you know what size the bolt is and the pitch of the thread. If they are 5/8-11, it should be easy to fix. Get the right tap, you may need to run a tap drill in the hole first(17/32"), then chase the threads with the tap. If you count how many full revolutions the tap goes in the hole, you will know how long a bolt you can use. A 5/8-11 bolt should have 15/16 engaged threads, or 10 full threads.

I would say you should drill out the holes in the frame to 5/8". Either that or the holes were made for 1/2" bolts. The softer bolts go in easier because there are softer. Definitely use grade 8 bolts. Maybe you have 15mm metric holes, being the machine is in Canada. lol |

Thanks guys. No metric in Canada until the 1980's so they can't be metric. They probably needed to have the tap run through them to clean all of the crud and rust out first but I didn't have one that size. I did use the softer bolts and they went right in with the impact wrench. I am going to try the grade 8 bolts tomorrow when I get a chance. I appreciate your assist. Dave

Take one of the old softer bolts and cut some grooves into it longways to make your chaser tap. I have done this a few times when I had to clean threads I didnt have a tap for.

Probably right on the crud in the threads. but there is a very slight difference sometimes between a bolt with cut threads and one with rolled threads. For what it's worth, I believe the thread length on a standard bolt is twice the bolt diameter.

are you sure that they aren't 9/16" bolts? Bob
