Ok I am working on my 190XT Diesel. Now that I have the glow plug/manifold heater working is sure starts better! Now for another electrical issue. My 190 has an alternator on it. It was of course bad, so I bought another. Externally regulated. New regulator as well. I can't seem to get a charge out of it. My Operator's manual show wiring diagrams for the 190D with a generator. Is there a difference from the wiring for the generator? I checked it all out today, and the wireing is correct for a Generator. Do I need to add or change anything for the alternator?

All 190's had an alternator. Only three wires to connect...Battery wire, ground wire and signal wire goes to the square plug (which comes from the regulator). There has to be power at the battery connection and at the signal wire (when running) if the regulator is doing it's job. Are you sure your ammeter is any good?? When you turn on the ignition key the regulator (under the dash hood)usually will "click" if it's got any chance of being good. Also has to be a good ground at the regulator.

Ok, It looks like what I am missing is the power at the signal wire (green wire from F terminal on regulator to F terminal on alternator) The terminals on the regulator are F, then 1, 2, 3. F is connected, 2 is power from the Key, 3 is always hot from the starter. When I check my F wire with a multi-meter It has continuity with ground with the key off. I will check it key on. when I go back today. Sounds like something may be amiss wiith the regulator then..

I forgot to address the part about the ammeter. It shows a slight discharge when the glow heater is used and larger discharge when cranking. I never get anything higher than battery voltage from the hot wire at the alternator, and no voltage from the F wire when running.
Thought maybe I had missed something but it sounds like my new regulator is not doing it's job. My 190 owners manual shows a generator as standard and mentions an alternator as optional.. but then it's not an original manual but a reprint so it could be somewhat generic.. Chris |

Check for the "click" when you turn the key switch on. if it doesnt click, the alt wont charge. Be sure the regulator is grounded too, no to itself, but to the hood frame.

I have it all figured out now. The 'new' voltage regulator installed by the shop that last worked on it is bad. New one tomorrow should fix everything.
