Question on coils and resistor for my d15 II. The tractor has a standard brand UC15 coil on it. Worked fine forever. I broke the stud on that coil and need to replace.
Going to the parts store -They don't have UC15 (of course) but the computer says: no ext resistor req'd use without elec igntion. -Their computer showed UC12 fits D15 II but needed a resistor. -They have a UC14 and say it fits D15II as well but it says 6V on it. They also say it's interchangeable with UC15. -They have a UC16 that says for electronic ignition. Any advice on what I could use that's locally available? |

If you have a 12 volts system and you are using an OLD 6V COIL, then you need the EXTERNAL RESISTOR.... If you have a 12 volt system and need a NEW COIL.. You should buy a NEW 12v coil with an INTERNAL 3 OHM resistor and eliminated the OLD external resistor..... Many 12v coils out there for tractors / cars/ trucks... and MOST have the INTERNAL Resistor ( should be marked).

If you have a NAPA nearby, the Echlin IC14 is the same coil as the SMP UC15 (and the UC15T in the SMP trade line). The Echlin line is supplied by SMP. Wire windings inside a coil (whether 6 or 12 volt) provide the resistance for intended system voltage. A 12-volt coil that does not require an external resistor was built with the correct size windings to provide the correct resistance. A 12-volt coil requiring an external resistor is wound for 6 volts thus the need for an external resistor. There have been no coils produced with actual resistors inside them for many, many years and then it was only a few, I think it was back in the 1920 range.

UC15 is the magic number. Ballast resistors didn't work under the hoods of 60's Automobiles, they sure as heck don't work out in the elements on a Tractor. Mother Nature plays havoc with ballast resistors on hot humid days or rainy days. Steve is right on it! Steve@B&B

If you need to use a 'ballast' resistor, get a Stackpole chassis mount type. They're in a pretty gold anodized tubular heatsink with 2 mounting holes, about $6 for 50 watt unit. Have used them for decades,both screwed onto frames as well as 'free floating'. The old skool units,3/8" square and 3" long, failed due to heat/cool expand/contract problems.

Thanks. Appreciate the help. Clears up questions I always had coil shopping. I happened to find a uc15 I bought a while back and stashed. On a side note I happen to need a condenser as well. She’s up and running like new.
