I have two G262 blocks that appear to be cracked just to the rear of the carburetor, underneath the manifold. Is a vertical crack in this spot caused by freezing, or something else?
If I recall correctly the WC/WD/etc. blocks always cracked horizontally behind the carb. I was wondering if the cracks I'm seeing in the 262s are typical of freezing. One has been repaired with a bolted on plate over the top of it, and the other appears to have been running for some time and has just slightly been seeping. EDIT: Meant rear of carb, not front... Towards the flywheel side. Dave, will look to see if it's between which cylinders later.

Water freezing and cast iron can be pretty odd sometimes. I haven't seen many 262 cracks, mostly like you, the 4 cyls tend to be horizontal... Is/are the cracks centered on a specific cyl? Sometimes a vertical crack can be indicative that a rod snapped, rapped the side of the block, causing a crack. Inspection from the inside would reveal if this is the cause...
