I've been lookin' around for an engine to stuff in my 716H Hotrod rider other than the norm. I happen to come across a guy that has a Briggs Vanguard 16HP engine for sale. Just curious if that engine would fit in the 716H without to many mods. I notice the oil filter on the side. Not sure if I have the room or not for that monster. Sure would look pretty damn cool tho sittin' in there. Hate to cut the frame, but I could do a couple small mods to the frame if neccessary. Also I probably could install a remote oil filter if the filter is in the way. Anybody try this yet with success? Just thinkin' out loud here....

Found dimensions on the internet on an 18HP VanGuard. I would imagine its the same size as a 16HP. According to the company selling them the dimensions are 20"H, 12.3 deep (less the shaft) & 16.1 wide. I'll have to stick a ruler on the frame. I would imagine the 16.1 is up at the valve covers. What I could use is the measurement of the engines base.

Steve, I just put my B&S VG 16HP twin into a mid 90's Cub Cadet(aka MTD) and needed 1" tall spacers to get the pulleys to lineup correctly. For some silly reason I had TWO sets of these spacers on the shelf! Threw the conrod of the original 16HP single that was in the Cub.THAT must be common as I have 5,er six now, busted engines on the shelf without the $80 rods in them and 'inspection windows' in the block walls.
The twin is a sweet sounding ,quiet engine. NOTE: Vanguards(mine did) have a split metal 'sleeve' IN the cyl. head of the exhaust port. I had to pull it out to get a 'normal'(1") exhaust system to fit and seal. Jay |

It will fit, I did my 912 15 years ago. I did have to raise it up, machined an adapter for the driveshaft, and change the ignition switch to a magneto type as the Koehler was battery ignition. I did a remote mount oil filter, B&S has a kit for this, or if you can find a parts guy that is willing to look there is several options for the filter base, you may find one that will work. All that aside, a fantastic engine, very smooth running, excellent starter in the cold, and more fuel efficient. A huge step up from the one cyl. turd .

Sounds like this could be a pretty cool transplant! |
