Wow that does sound a little out there! I don't know anything about it, but maybe someone else can give you advice from experience. I pull a wd myself so I'd be interested to know too!

Tried to find the pinion shaft and bull gear teeth numbers of 180 and 185. Couldn't find the numbers for a 185 tho it says they are the same that was listed in a 180/185 manual.  The pinion for 180 is 13 tooth and bull is 76 tooth...
Now, I looked in a 170/175 manual ... the teeth on a 170 pinion shaft are 14 tooth to 76 tooth final drive gear, and the 175 was reduced to 13 tooth pinion shaft with 76 tooth final.
Apparrently the 175, 180 & 185 are the same finals...
So, what are the pinion and final number of teeth in a WD or WD45  ... or D17?

WD's-WD45's- D-17's prior to series 3 are 15 x 82 teeth for 5.47 to 1 ratio.........effective series 3 D-17, D-17 IV and all 170's are 14 x 76 teeth for 5.43 to 1 ratio for essentially no difference in speeds. Now, the 175-180-185's are 13 x 76 teeth and are much wider and are 5.85 to 1 ratio which is about 6% slower. The axle splines are fine and will not fit the older differential side gears as-is. Brakes are different and the weight of the finals would be at least 50 lbs each more.

DR, is its even possible ?  I would have thought a 185 was twice as big as a WD ...Bearings cant be the same size , can they ?
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

It is possible to bolt-on the entire 175-180-185 final onto a WD...YES. But, you have to change differential side gears and do something about the brakes. NOTHING inside a 175-180-185 final drive fits inside a WD final....all parts too big.

now if a fellow could recut the 14 tooth pinion to fit into the 82 tooth bull gear, then the ratio would be 5.86 to 1 ratio

Using a late WD or WD-45 transmission opens the door to custom made gears/speeds inside the tranny, as all the gears are individual. It also allows use of the WD-45 diesel ring and pinion which is 15% slower than the gas models. A slick set-up would be a two-speed box inside where the hand clutch is located to afford 8-speeds instead of 4-speeds.

A older Lenco two speed tranny might be small enough to be squeezed in the hand clutch housing?

With enough money and effort anything is possible. On a WD/WD45, there is room to put all kinds of gear combinations in there, unless it is strictly a bolt in swap generally speaking, starting over and making gears and shafts is cheaper than trying to modify and cobble  existing pieces into place, it really helps to be very familiar with gearing, splines, and heat treating processes before attempting such a project though, even if paying someone else to do it. Final drives are the most expensive and challenging place to experiment because of the size of the gears and shafts involved, if you miss, it can cost you big time.

To put 180 finals on a WD45, use side gears from 180, splined brake hub from 180, brake drum from WD45. Turn center out of WD drum, turn splined hub from 180 to fit WD drum and bolt togather. Works good. Have run that way for several years with no problems. Runs 6% over roadgear @ 4500 RPMs.  MACK

Any time you go thru a gear-set, there is a HP loss of some kind. When in "high side" you are in direct drive, but you are still spinning the other four low-side gears regardless. When you are in "low side" you are transmitting power thru two gear-sets. It's always more efficient to be gearing slower than trying to over-drive something (in my opinion).

Well what would just be awesome for my tractor atleast would be to have the diesel first gear, gas first gear, and diesel 2nd. That would give 3 options for 4mph and down with the 15.5s from 4000 to 6000lbs

Transmission gear ratios in WD 45' were all the same, gas or diesel. The difference was in ring and pinion.
