    Posted: 13 Sep 2024 at 8:17am
For some reason, over the past several months the gas cap on my 720 will not easily come off as it used to.  I have to use considerable pressure to lift and remove it.  Yes, the nob parts on the cap are lined up with the notches in the neck of the tank, so that is not the issue.  Any ideas?   Thanks, Dave

It may be the gasket sticking? My 720 would be running fine and then shut off. 20 minutes later it would start and run for 5 minutes and shut off. I lifted the hood and noticed the tank sides were sucked in. Removed the cap and the tank took a big breath of fresh air and the tank sides returned to their normal shape. Replaced both of my 720 caps with one with a gauge . Problem solved.

Yeah, its like the cap shrunk up or something.  Hot or cold, it doesn't want to easily come off.  Crazy thing!

I have filed the outside of the tank opening to reduce this tight fit.  First, to be on the safe side I plugged the tank opening with clean rag.  Herb(GA)

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that on the outside of the tank.  Or, perhaps a wire wheel in my drill and do the inside of the cap.

If it's plastic you might try leaving it off for a month or so. Remove it completely not just loose, need to get it away from the gas. That works on chain saw caps.

Yes, it is plastic.  So, keeping it away from the gas fumes will let it expand back out?

Yes, I do it with chain saw caps all the time. The chain saw cap fit inside the tank and your mower cap go over the neck but I think it's worth a try.
One more thought is the tank plastic? If so it may have expanded.
I would like to know if it works.

Tank is not plastic.
