I have a power director 7040 and love it. I'm looking at a power shift 7040 tractor to make into a puller. Is this a mistake? Should I be looking for a power director to pull with? By the way, I cant pull with my current 7040 as it is a low hour family heirloom. Thanks everyone.

Power Shift is fine, but less speed choices.

Many have pulled with Power-Shift-Transmissions. I've even done it myself. However once you get into it are you absolutely sure you will never decide to go faster with more HP? With that in mind I'd be looking for a gear drive instead of a Power-Shift. With my hands on experience in high HP pullers NEVER downshift with a Power-Shift. Find out what gear you can handle and never go any higher than that.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

Why don't you downshift?

Well in my past experience with a Power Director- some shifts can be smooth some not- you.ve got tons of weight behind you- then changing the inertia of everything - can work out but sends shock thru the drivetrain,, Powershifts have to be tight ; just my opinion now

Things don't happen when upshifting, however from PRESONAL experience with HIGH HP pulling, downshifting is when things break.

Thanks for the reply. I have never pulled, and assumed it was something like that, but you know what assuming gets you. :)

the downshift isn't quick enough for sled pulling, my 7040 PD that I pull on occasion is fine to shift up at start of pull, but have tried downshift at end and it stops, then takes off again, very abrupt, so I just quit using it to downshift. I think mods have been done to them to make them shift quicker, but mine is all original in the PD section.

The speed with which the clutch packs release and engage has to be quickened up as the HP increases. 220 HP isn't an issue but 400 HP sure would be.

A cousin of mine was at a tractor pull in the '70s after Allis came out with a power shift transmission. There was one pulling and he up shifted and down shifted. The announcer made the comment " That tractors got more gears than Carters got liver pills!" I dont know what year or how the tractor did, but thought it was a funny story.

The Allis 12-speed Power Shift should look pretty good in classes where your top speed will never be above 6MPH. When in LOW range your speeds are 1 MPH apart from 5th on down and are pretty nice clean/smooth shifts. Where the Allis tranny wouldn't look good is where you are expecting ground speeds of over 6 MPH as the spread between gear selections becomes quite wide.
