Putting a set of rims together for 18.4 38 tires and was hoping to some info on rim width for best results thanks

what worked best for me was if its a 16.9 16 inches 18.4 18 inch rim. was told that on a deep tread radial you could go a inch wider. also it may differ if you are pulling in light weight classes.

The tires Firestone sat ll for a 8000 lbs class.

Last summer I was using a friends set of 18.4X38 tires mounted on 20" rims. In my opinion I though that was too wide. The rims I made for my own 18.4X38s turned out to be 17" and that seems to work well. I noticed that even with very high pressures the 20" rim allowed the tread to rise up in the middle of the dig outs at the end of the pull.  
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
