Dave,
Thanks I did not know that trick. Yes I miss Don (MO) and his wisdom and friendship!  I did have the side trumpets off my 45 but it needed brakes and seals and brake drum. Trying to not do as much work on this tractor.
Took the day off and worked on a steel project for the proposed shop.
Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
Well the broken WZ is coming back together:

Found the gaskets for the oil sumps in a roll of 3/32 gasket material:

I missed one hole some how:

Pulled in the new seals I did not put any sealer around the o.d.

Used a piece of PVC to stage the spacer, bull gear, and snap ring:

Used guide pins to position the pans:

Got the inside small bearings in place, installed bolt washers and shim, then cap.
Wheels reinstalled and took it for a ride. All seemed good! No leaks yet!
Thanks for checking in on me!
Regards,
 Chris

Good work, (as always) Chris. Your homemade gaskets look great. Local Agco dealer still stocks them here, just picked up a set for the D-17.

There are 'snap-ring pliers' available for that style of ring. I have a couple pair, they work good.

Mike, Folks,
Thanks. Yea I should have a set of those pliers too. But I don't so I still get it done just not as easy!

Folks,
First pull of the year in our area is tomorrow. May take this old WZ. I have a bunch of weights for it. Would also like to see what it weighs with the new rear wheels (solid not spin out). I believe I will be a little less than 3500 and may need to add some weights.

The pull is a stone boat on dirt I think. I have never tried that. Might be able to get the light pulls in before the predicted rains.
I still have those set of good spin out 28 inch rims. I should probably sell. Dont really need them for a tractor now!
Regards,
 Chris

Most pulls here are "stone" boat on dirt events. Don't use stones anymore - all concrete blocks, now. Nothing like watching (and watching and watching and...) a tractor calmly pulling that boat 100' in 1st gear. My wife says it's like watching paint dry. Wink

Dave, Mike,
No I did not load up and go. Was very wet the night before and were predicting rain at pull time too.
I whimped out and did some other tasks.
The WZ was called in to service to pull down some dead ash trees that my son was cutting for fire wood. I dug some pretty good ruts!:)
Will see if I got any pictures? Well I did not do good and get any WZ pictures. But here is one with Eric on the old WD wide front.

Regards,
 Chris

Folks,
This WZ tractor has a problem in the drive line that I need some help from the experts on. Tractor running. Push in foot clutch put in gear. Hand clutch is engaged. Let foot clutch out slow and there is a growling noise in the clutch area or drive line.
If you disengage the hand clutch and let the foot clutch out while in gear, then pull back the hand clutch there is no noise. Would this be the pilot bushing in the flywheel? or the small bushing between the front and rear drive shaft?
Tractor tries to move just a little when the hand clutch is disengaged. and the foot clutch is let out. Just a little movement of the machine, like the hand clutch is trying to grab?
I have greased the throw out bearing. That did not seem to help
Regards,
 Chris

Dr,
Thank you for the comment!  I haven't seen a button clutch. I does have what I believe is a 9 spring pressure plate. Should I be able to see the difference from the underside of the tractor through the inspection hole?
Its a fairly loud whine/growl/ vibration as the foot clutch is engaged.
If the tractor is not in gear engine running and you work the foot clutch there is no noise.
Regards,
Chris

Allis Folks,
Well it only took a little over 4 years to get back to the issue mentioned in the last post in July of 2020. Wow! Lots of things have happened since then.
This past Saturday I attended a local stone boat pull with the WZ. I pulled in three classes. 3750, 4000 and 4500 lb classes. ( The WZ will get down to 3500 lb.)
Anyway it still had the very annoying loud noise in the drive line and was very hard to get into gear. I also got beat by a strong John Deere in the 4000 lb class. I wasn't real happy!
Sunday it came in the shop (which did not exist 4 years ago) and I started to take the tractor apart to find out what was causing this noise.
By the way it was nice to go back through some of my own thread to see what I had done and or forgotten about the old Allis.

I did something a little different on this tear down. I cleaned up the removed fasteners and bagged and tagged them. Yikes that's scary! I also fixed things as I took things apart too. Wow! I even impressed myself!

The bottom sections of the old rad were flopping around. I tacked in a piece of steel across to stiffen and keep this from getting in the fan.

Going to look into getting a D17 governor spring for the old engine.

Started taking the engine out this afternoon. Yikes it was tight. loosened the left frame rail a little to allow the engine to get past the rails.

So the noise was caused from the clutch disc area near the springs hitting the bolt heads holding the flywheel in place. Also one of the portions of the old clutch fell off.
The flywheel face and 9 spring pressure plate look good. Have to still check the pilot bushing and throw out bearing. But I believe we have found the noise problem!

I took Cheryl out for a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant. That's what we are supposed to do!
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

ya gotta rock the engine over sideways a little to get it out past the steering shaft. It will go in and out without moving the side rail.

Folks,
New std clutch purchased from Sandy Lake around noon. Installed correctly and the engine is back in the tractor. I did not remove the frame rail but did let the front move out about 3/8 inch, and that helped. It was a tight fit but it went back in quickly. Should have the rad back on tomorrow. Then some testing. Also installed a stiffer D17 governor spring. We will see if that adds a little pep to the WZ? Looking forward to some local pulls.

Dan, folks,
So it starts to come together! It really helped that I organized the nuts and bolts as I went and also made some needed repairs as I took things apart. I did replace all the hoses and the belt. All items that had a lot of age on them. New coolant.
I took it for a short ride and the governor was just singing compared to the old spring in there. Clutch worked great!
It was worth the 4 days of playing in the shop.
Dan the shop is always a disaster as projects are in process or are just aging. If you want to see some details of the shop check under Shop barns and varmints... The thread is Shop Talk. Great if you can't sleep!:)

Used a A series belt at 44 inches long. it fit the alternator better than a B series belt.

Tucked the WZ away. Very happy with this repair. Hope to get it to a pull soon. I would like to pull it in 3500 lb class, maybe second gear about half throttle?? Have about 1000 lbs of weights on it right now.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Allis folks,
A couple shots where I did open the hand clutch area and do a visual check:

It looked about as good as any WD clutches that I have seen. Buttoned it back up and called it good. It did not slip when I pulled Monday night.

The tractor driver did not do well in the Wattsburg tractor pulls.

I tried second gear and the track was to sticky for that. I should have been in low gear. Had fun getting out and testing the WZ.   Neither of the clutches slipped as I ran out of power. I may have had the adjustable needle screw turned in too far on the carb?

Another fair pull in Wattsburg this coming Wednesday. So we can test on it again.
Would really like to get the great grandson on this tractor at the local Albion fair in 3 weeks too. He just turned 12 and with a little more practice he could pull this Allis in the 3500 lb class. He plans to pull the Ford Jubliee.

Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Lynn, Folks,
Yes you're correct! The previous owner or before had installed the clutch backwards! So it can happen! No noise now and it shifts as it should with the foot clutch depressed.

Allis folks,
Tested on the WZ last night a local fair tractor pull. I removed 1000 lbs and pulled in the 3500 lb class. Tractor ran fine in low gear on a medium stick track. Not many front ends were in the air.  In hind sight which is always wonderful, I may have done better in the 4500 lb class, with some additional weight on the back. It spun out way before the 300 foot mark. Ok so we have another pull tomorrow night. I think I will load the weight back on and try it in low gear again?

Not sure what these green things are? In the background is my friend Jim unloading his new to him Cockshutt 20. He got first in the 3000 lb class! There were 147 hooks at this fair pull.

Another wide front Allis at the pull. sorry for the blurry pic.

It is a lot to ask that Cheryl hangs in there for these long winded events! She does really well tolerating me and my old hobbies!
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl
