I bought an Allis G last year at an estate sale. It was in a dry building but had not run in 12 years. Here is what was done to it: rebuilt carburetor, fuel tank flushed clean, all fuel lines purged. Fuel flowed into the sediment bowl nicely and into the carb. Next ignition: new and proper plugs, points, rotor, cap, condenser, distributor cap, sparkplug wires, ignition switch, coil. I do have an 8 volt battery in it. I also use one in my other G that I cultivate potatoes with. So here goes: the tractor starts easily, but dies in 3 seconds. I used an ignition checker and it showed when the tractor died, it was still getting spark until the engine came to a complete stop. After tinkering, and frustration, I took the carb/sediment bowl off my other running G thinking the problem was the rebuilt carburetor. No luck. Same issue. Any ideas? I'm frustrated.

how do you crank it ?  with a KEY ?  Sometimes the coil gets FIRE when the key is in the START POSITION, then looses it when you put the key in the ON position..... Try putting a HOT WIRE directly onto the coil, then crank and see what it does.

Should not stop in 3 seconds if it is fuel.. Should take 30 seconds to suck the fuel out of the carb bowl.

I started it with the pull rod that leads to the starter. Ignition switch turned on.

Get a spray bottle and put gas in it. Pop off air cleaner hose to carb. Start it (helper is handy) while spraying gas mist into carb to see if keeps running beyond 3 seconds. If it continues running dependant on your spray mist, then it is a fuel problem.

I got the smaller harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner to clean up a stubborn carb on my Ferguson. So I also did the carb on my WD that wouldn't start last fall and saw the alternator wire was broken so a rewire project.

Rewired, new super clean carb, still not starting.
Went through the distributor cleaning posts and flanges. Swapped in the coil from my other Ferguson when it was 6v like the WD. Wasn't starting.

Sometimes you just gotta swear at the stupid machine. Fired right off!

Some reason the tractor was missing and a backfiring on test drive. Thought maybe go through the plugs when the engine cooled down. But decided to swap back to the original coil and started right up with no skips.

It just needed that bit o' cursing ;)

i had a B that mud dobbers built a nest INSIDE the air cleaner cap above the hood... Like having the CHOKE on all the time.. it would fire off, then sputter and die....  disconnect the air cleaner from the carb and run without for a test.

As per above, also exhaust restriction will cause a similar run/die/repeat scenario so check that. (IF the swearing doesn't sort her, does sometimes come down to that!)

Also, new condensors are junk & can be worse than a 60 year old one. Luck of the draw if you get a working one but worth checking too.

Swearing hasn't worked for me, but I still try it regularly!

Try getting one of the spark indicator lights that goes between the plug wire and the plug. Start it in the dark (so you can see the light) and see if it is still sparking while it's stalling.

If it restarts almost immediately, it sounds more like a fuel issue to me. My guess would be a float that is hung partially up or a sticking needle valve.

WF owner in Bombay, NY, thanks too. In my initial write up I did indicate I did this, and it and the ignition checker did indicate a spark until it completely shut down. I have a few things to try. I want to get it ready for next summer GOTO in Canandaigua. I have a ariens tillavator to attach to it. Really cool. I live in Otsego County.

im not convinced the coil or condenser isnt causing a problem... But  , assuming you have SPARK, AIR and FUEL... the only thing left is timing.... Maybe the engine starts at TDC, but will not ADVANCE to run at a higher RPM... Not sure it would die in 3 seconds, but timing is something to check.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Try leaving the air hose off the carburetor. Be ready with a can of starting fluid and spray it in the carb when it dies. If you can keep it running using starting fluid, you will narrow it down to a carb problem.

I just posted something similar in a different post, but a few years back, I had a B that did basically the same thing; start and immediately stop. I had soaked the carb (several times) in a gallon of carburetor cleaner and sprayed aerosol carb cleaner through every orifice. Dick L, who used to post often on here, posted that he put carbs in a pan of water and boiled them. I tried it and it solved my problem. 

I have an old hot plate (that we used when our kitchen was being renovated) and an old pan. I remove everything that can be removed from the carb. I shoot carb cleaner through the orifices and put the carb (and most parts except the float) in the pan with some Dawn dishwashing soap. I bring it to a rolling boil and let it boil for about 3 minutes. When it is cool enough to handle, I shoot carb cleaner through the orifices one more time, then wipe it all down and reassemble. 

It is simple and it works for me, but I wouldn't recommend using your wife's kitchen stove!!!

Edit: I use torch tip cleaners in the orifices, too.
