I have rebuilt transmission on D14 to repair damaged gears.   Now it work normally without noise in reverse.   Power director seems out of adjustment and does not crisply lock in like it used to, especially the low side.   I see a shimming procedure in the manual.  Is this something that is done while working through the side cover?   Just asking for any tips.  It worked well before but I replaced bearings and gears so the things may have moved around a bit.

Yes, you can access that through the side cover to do the adjustment.
Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal!

It worked fine before, you did nothing to it and now it doesn't work the same ??  Shimming would be foolish and you must have the internal set-screw not tight enough.

Ok, will pull cover and look it over good.     Should the lever mechanism work properly when not spinning to check things out?  First time I have dug into a D series.  Owned this one for over ten years and torque director always worked fine.  Pinion shaft bearing had too much clearance and it ended up damaging pinion gear on reverse side.   That was evidently cause of noise.   Thanks for the help.

This ended up being a long project.   I split the tractor again and found out that I had left out the snap ring that goes behind the power director and stops it from sliding backward.  As it turned out while it was in the shop I decided to look closer at the engine and found multiple issues that needed addressed.   It had always started and ran ok but I found a cracked head, valves not seating, and really bad deposits all over.   Fixed all.
I converted from 12V positive ground to negative while I was messing with it.
Starts and drives good now.   Will go into storage now and I can use my shop for some other projects that fell behind.

Nice looking D14, even better when the side shields and grill get put on. According to the decals looks to be a 1959 or 1960 black bar grill tractor?

yeah I hope to get back to it in spring and do some cosmetics.  I have the grill and side panels, I just did not hang them back on.  The decals are wrong, it should have the 57 decals.  I have a wide front for it but have not got around to swapping.  This not the same tractor but it is like the last tractor they kept around when they closed down the old family dairy farm.  My cousin actually found the original one but it was in pretty bad shape.  The old Wagner industrial loader with oversized bucket was hard on it.  The picture shown is me on it when almost new.  Wish I had the old Cockshutt in background also.  Truck beside it is a 57 Chevy Viking single axle that was on the road into the 80s.

all the old tractors had those generic seat covers made of some sort of coated canvas duck material.  Always thought the new vinyl style covers looked cheesy by comparison on a restored tractor.   Notice the tractor does not look bright and shiny, but is probably less than a year old.
