I also have a few sets and don't know what size they fit.  Someone (tire co., chain supplier. etc.) has surely made some sort of basic chart, but my prior searches have not turned up much.
Any ideas?

I've been looking for the same thing.  Maybe if everyone on the forum reported their chain dimensions and the tires they use them on we could make such a chart?

When calculating tire diameter X 3.14, be sure to measure the diameter where the side chain links will actually ride on the tire.  Rim diameter isn`t helpful when calculating chain length.  Tire width is also important to know.  The wider the tire, the longer the cross links need to be.  Had to make up chains for the Caterpillar 140G  used for snow plowing at the Village where I worked.  Hope I didn`t confuse anyone.  It`s much easier to show someone than to explain it.

3.14 x diameter will give the distance around the tire, but the chain side links and distance that the cross links cover are what's important and this is what people usually measure when the chain set is laid on a flat surface.  I've looked for a chart too, and haven't had any luck.

One site that shows what chains will fit what tires sizes is;

But, it doesn't state what un-installed length is.

There's a topic (video) on there on how to determine the size of chain needed if the size you have is not on the charts, however, it only goes as far as having you measure the tire and submit the dimensions to them...doesn't tell you what actual length is needed.

Just guessing with what they are asking, that the length of the chain set is a factor of those dimensions and through some algorithm, they determine the overall length.
They also have a video showing how to install the chains, with steps showing how to shorten the sides....  so, the length they'll provide is more than likely purposely too long as they'd not want to ship you chains that are too short.

I have a set of tire chains that are 73" long and 12" wide. Anyone know what size tire they will fit?

I found this.

How many times have you found a set of tire chains with no size information and wondered if they would fit your intended usage? To see if tire chains will fit: measure tire tread width (W) and tire height (H). Measure, don’t use tire size! Measure tire chain length (L) and inside span (S) of the chains you are checking. Subtract W from S and then subtract that number from (H) which will give you the diameter of the tire chain circle. Multiply that by 3.14 and you get the tire chain length (L). Remember you can add or overlap a few links on the chain length to make minor adjustments and a wider span requires a shorter chain length. Also. A few pounds more or less of air pressure will allow more latitude in the fit. I hope this is useful to someone.

Here is a link to a tire chain mfg./supplier:

http://www.lacledechain.com/tc_catalog/FLASH/index.html

Go to the back of the catalog to the specifications section, go to the table for the type chain you have (truck, tractor - ladder, duo-grip, double ring). Match the length, width, link diameters and note the assembly #.   Go to the front of the catalog fit charts and you can match the assembly to tire sizes that that assembly will fit.

I always just take one and mount it on the tractor I want it to fit.  If it don't fit, I know its either bigger or smaller than what I want.  Murphy's law subparagraph 13 (b) section 2 states, that if its free, it don't fit anything you have...Wink
