Be aware of : Freedomnoal who sends you to Bill Robertson. Pretty sure they are scammers. I'd rather you would not ask how I know but I never got the manual I paid for and no more communications. Could have been worse but I hate that I did not see thru it until about 2 hours later. If you pay with PayPal, DO NOT do so by Friends and Family. You have no recourse. Den

It seems like the new trend in scammers. I came close to being burned as well on other items, where 'someone' knows of 'someone else' who has the part you need. As soon as I see this perverse kind of "two factor authentication", I run the other way. They seem to do it for fairly low budget items, but losing even $50 bucks to such low life still stings.

Standard issue scam I'm afraid, lot of them on here lately I'm sorry to hear you were bitten.
I have suggested a "sticky" post in the classifieds detailing the common scams/fraudulent activity like this but seems to have not been taken up on. More's the shame as it might have helped you out. Maybe I should revert back to my WTB for nonexistent items and see who magically just happens to know "a guy"...

I agree, we need a list we can go to and quickly check.

I have no problem with a list of scammers. But really is it worth the time? Because they create a new name and accounts as fast as you can list them. Just tell them you want to do business in person. That will scare most into disappearing rather than giving you an address.

Not a list of scammers, I agree that'd be futile since they have unlimited IP addresses and "names" to choose from as long as they verify their account by email (again, not hard to make a spurious one). Not to mention a good deal of the "new" scammers are actually "sleeper" accounts that have been created years previously & lain dormant, maybe making one or two AI generated posts to gain credibility.
The post I suggested was more a list of common scam/phishing modus operandi to be on the lookout for, and perhaps suggestions to deter them like you suggested, since (due to the very nature of this forum's subject matter) a great deal of our members have not had the opportunity to grow up "internet streetwise" because it simply didn't exist. What is a very obvious scam to someone raised in the internet age, can legitimately seem like an OK deal to older folks hence the idea of a sticky-post folks can browse to at least raise their awareness of the common scams like the "i know a guy" kind. Either way, in light of this post I'll "bump" up my suggestion in the forum issues area.

local couple 'lost' their $50,000 travel trailer as the bank issued draft was BOGUS. sadly Bank didn't know if it was good or not. Note to all. Be sure cheque/draft/money order CLEARS your bank for at LEAST 7 days BEFORE you hand over the goods !!!

ekjdm14 I did not grow up in the internet age, just a skeptic by nature. Maybe I have just been lucky. I have responded to adds on selling sites that "were to good to be true". Ask to see the item in person never another sound/message from them. So even if you think you are 1000's of miles away, I think asking for a location to see it shuts most of the scams down.
We have some very sad stories on here of relatively rare items that the person had been seeking for many years. And sadly the scammer had enough knowledge to get pictures of the item in "parked in the fence row" state and even talked on the phone, if I remember right with the correct terms. This one was so bold they even gave a location. And lucky for them was the opposite side of the USA. More warning is never a bad thing, so I encourage you in posting what you think might help.

Well to add to the scam story, I listed that I needed a hood for a 620 or 720 Allis Chalmers garden tractor (still need one) and got 2 messages. 2 things worked against them. First since I let myself get scammed last week, I was on the lookout for truth and second...they both sent me the same 3 pictures of a hood. I bet they are not happy with each other. Next thing the scammers will have a clearing house to make sure they are not trying to scam with the same pictures. By the way, they have blocked their message area from me.
