a friend of mine gave me a riding mower, said the brakes didn't work, that he was constantly running into things.....as confirmed by the 'rash' on the front of it

two questions:
It's a Troy Built, 18 HP but I cannot find a model and/or serial no on it anywhere. Any ideas?

I'm not sure the brakes are the problem. It almost seems like it is a direct drive and, unless one throttles back each time the brakes are applied. Otherwise it just digs in and tries to overcome the brakes. 
engine running, set throttle, and then select the direction with a handle (FNR) on the left beside the driver As soon as it goes into F or R, its off to the races, even if the go peddle is not depressed. Seems to me there is something with that go peddle on the right that is not right.
Any thoughts? anyways, I don't have a manual for it, so if I can find it's identity somewhere i will try to find it on line

I take it it's a hydrostatic drive. The neutral point needs to be adjusted. Probably sticky or rusted. I haven't worked on a troybuilt but every thing else has a linkage system that moves the hydro input to neutral when you step on the brake. If it's not in the correct position the brakes won't hold it back.

Lou, sounds exactly like the Troy Built I just bought and took to the Cabin last week. When you let off the hydro/speed/go petal the mower stops and you can shift to reverse or forward or put it in neutral and lock the brake. If you hit the brakes the mower stops. this mower was completely gone over by my mower mechanic. HTH, sounds like Dave  has it figured out, good luck...Harvey

I doubt that this is a hydrostatic drive. The model number is probably under the seat on the fender pan or the base of the seat. These were made by MTD and they were well known for a belt drive system like this with the F-N-R lever. MTD has been using that system on low end models for probably over 30 years.

anything from MTD is the lowest end on the market and not worth fixing! They are a "throw- away" product!  Work great when new for a while.

well, I have been unable to find the Model/SN ANYWHERE on this thing. I suspect it is not hydrostatic.  I was hoping to find some service info on line, but w/o an ID no hope there. Guess I will need to put in on the forks of the tractor front loader and lift it up so I can see the whirlies, rods, belts, and levers and see what's happening.

we work on alot of mowers each year and the mtd stuff really aint that bad   by no means industrial grade   look at all the crappy husquavarnas with the pastic transmission what a pile of crap

It's made by MTD, same as Cub Cadet and 8-0 other brands...
Funny how people LOVE their Cub Cadets, turn their noses up at 'MTD'.....
FNR is their 'automatic' transaxle system. Engine drives a variable speed 2 cone pulleys, then into the single speed transaxle.
'Jumping' into F or R indicates 2 things..
1) the WRONG drive belts( IE. NON OEM belt ) were installed
2) 'neutral' has not been adjusted

'how-to-fix' info is online at MTD.

I've got 3+ decades of using MTD, current cutter is a Cub Cadet, 20+ years old, original deck,hydrostatic drive, 2nd motor(original got stuck when PO didn't check the 710 stick !

Biggest 'problem' with MTD units is the OWNERS not cleaning decks AND using the lawn MOWER as an airplane tug ! 1st rots out the deck, 2nd destroys the transaxle. Abuse. Simple as that.

In an ideal world, I'd like to have 3 more AC130. That way ONE set of belts AND they all work the SAME !
