I'm about to finally place an order for some bolts so I can get the head on the rusty redneck B. Just a quick sanity check prior to pulling the trigger, they're 3/8 UNC correct?
I've found a source for them at 3" and 4" for reasonable money just wanted to make sure I'm not completely throwing cash out the window (I already am at peace with the fact I'm throwing good money after bad in my endeavour, but I WILL see this old girl run & drive again!) Thanks, Dan

they are not 3/8 inch.. Torque is 60 ft pounds.. I seem to recall they are 7/16 NC.... Better get someone to confirm.......... 3/8 bolts are less than 40 ft pounds torque..

Good call, thanks both. Glad I double checked beforehand. 7/16 sounds better, a random 3/8 did seem to thread in but given the crust in the holes it was probably just biting into dirt and corrosion.
I doubt I'll be using genuine/original bolts sadly as they're not as easily available in the UK & given I've already "invested" £225 on this incomplete trash-fire (£195 for the pile of parts & another £30 for a rear inner tube) it's getting the tightwad special as far as reconstruction goes! Should be able to locate suitable Gr.8 bolts & washers for another £30 or less, Good to have the part numbers though, never know if some turn up. (Have already lost hope of the seller ever finding these & the rocker shaft, think it's just been torn down too long & the parts are gone walkies). |

i have used 7/16 NC Grade 8 bolts more than once... no problems.

I recall you saying that when I was originally looking into this, did kind of put it on the back burner for a while to see if the bits turned up but now looking like I'm going full redneck to see her run, welded up Ford Crossflow rocker assembly & all! Thanks for bearing with me.
Have ordered a couple of 7/16 x 2" bolts for a few quid, partly to reconfirm thread size but mainly to cut flutes in and use them to chase the threads in the block since they're filthy. Edited by ekjdm14 - 15 Oct 2024 at 3:51pm |

Sadly it's the shipping that'd likely be prohibitive, that seller doesn't want to ship to the UK either.
Found a good online store in the UK though, Frank's Fasteners. The pair of 7/16-14 "test" bolts I bought for £3.81 arrived in under 48hrs & been super impressed by the selection and service so will likely order the actual bolts & washers from them along with any other hardware that needs to be located for the project. Thanks again Steve & Gary for preventing the erroneous purchase of 3/8 bolts!

for bolt LENGTH.. It is nice in cast iron to have a thread depth of 2 X the diameter of the bolt... 2 x 7/16 is ...7/8 inch you should have that depth into the block with GOOD THREADS ( at least 3/4 inch)... verify that as you clean... measure the thickness of the head and add that for the bolt length... Not all the same..
Some use Hardened Washers under the bolt head... take that and the head gasket into account also.

Thanks again Steve, only a month later & have got around to ordering the bolts & washers. Will keep fingers crossed for time to actually go play with the machine soon, get the threads, head & deck surface all cleaned up and get the head on so the engine's sealed from the elements before the start of winter proper.

Before you install your new bolts, run a tap down every bolt hole in the block for the cylinder head to clean the rust and crud out. This will make torquing more accurate with clean threads. Also doesn't hurt to put a little dab of machine or motor oil on the threads as well. I always use a load washer under head bolts too. A load washer is just a little thicker than a standard washer. This gives the bolt head a nice flat surface area to seat against. HTH Steve@B&B
