I Used a Gas block on my D19 Diesel and all the liner protrusions were right on.

Is your water pump mounted on your block or cylinder Head?

there is one on Ebay for $400.  Link:

So a 262 gas block can be used as a diesel block? Didn't know that.

The D-19 came out in late 1961. At that time the water pump went from the cylinder head down to the front of the block. I would imagine the D-17 engine got the same change at the same time. All D-19's were 262- wet sleeve engines with the water pump mounted on the block. That means gas-diesel and LPgas were all the exact same engine block. Gas/LP blocks are perfect for a diesel restoration, as the lower compression ratio hasn't pounded the sleeves below flush. Unfortunately, AC never had a 262 gas version in the old block/water pump design that they used in farm equipment. There sure could be such a thing out there on a gen set, water pump, etc.

you can have the block decked a few thou and recut the counterbores.  if you get another block i would sure have it checked before just throwing parts in.  We were going to have our block decked but it had cracks so we went with a gas one.  still ended up taking a couple thou off the top to get all liners +.004.

Not sure how much you can deck the block without having to cut the same amount off of the pistons. Pretty sure things get really close when the block gets decked very much.

You can use the later style block with the early head. I have a later gas block in my early D17D with the pump on the head. I just made a block off plate for the block pump and from there it's the same besides the turbo drain hole.
