IIRC, the 248 comes in different blocks and they are not interchangeable.

What WF is referring to is a "Stress Block", and conventional block engines. They are not interchangeable at all. The "Stress Block" does not have a bolt on rear flywheel housing and the these are used a lot where the tractor engine is part of the structure of the tractor meaning no frame rails.

On the left side of the engine there should be an aluminum tag riveted to the block. Many 4.248 engines were stamped "LG" build. If the tag is missing, there should be stampings into the block above the injection pump just below the cylinder head deck, or same place at the rear.

There is also a different crankshaft layout. One has a single large bolt, the other a three bolt affair retaining the front pulley(s). There are also differences internally but need to know what you have before going much further.

A 4.236 will be a slip fit also if the same basic block.

I'm trying to remember what DrAllis said, but I think he said that the AC 175 used a different block than the Massey Ferguson 165/175/180.

I have a friend with a Massey 175 and it uses a stress block 4.236 engine. I've never seen a 175 diesel Allis myself so cannot vouch, nor deny culpability in that application.

Keep in mind those engines were produced in gasoline variants also; though I've not seen a 4.248 with anything but diesel myself.
