Is there a trick to remove the transmission top cover plate?
Six bolts and it should just lift off? Mine gets stuck on the seat frame. I have the seat that slides back and forth. I was wiggling and jigging the cover and all I managed to do is scratch the paint.
Do I have to remove the seat assembly. I just wanted to see what was under there.

On all of mine (with various seat frames), I'm pretty sure that the seat frame bolts also helped hold down the transmission cover.

The seat bolts are not holding down the cover.
There just doesn't seem to be enough room to slip the cover out
of there. The console pedestal sheet metal slopes rearward, the adjustment lever latch for the seat is only about 1/4 clearance to the hump (about 2" high) on the rear part of cover. I think the formed in hump clears the PTO clutch. Tractors are supposed to be easy to work on. Darn little cover gives me trouble.

I think my seat is lower than normal, maybe not original.
The 720 Special could be had without the rear PTO, maybe the seat was
lower? With no PTO clutch, the top cover wouldn't need that hump, and seat could have been made lower.
I have looked at a lot of pictures on the web, I see 3 different transmission covers- flat no hump. Humped with stiffener bead up front and rounded corners. Hump, no stiffener bead and front corners notched.

I suspect my machine is mix and match parts.

There is a trick to it, but it will come off without taking the seat off.  I can't tell you how to do it, because the last time I did ours, was over a year ago.  It's just a matter of angles and wiggling, it's tight but you will eventually find a sweet spot, and out it comes.
