I am new to this forum, and evidently not quite smart enough to find the same post twice. I have a 1955 WD45 that I have had for less than a month. I overhauled the carb, and replaced the fuel shut off on the tank, and have the tractor running quite well.
I can't get any of the hydraulics to work. I purchased an operators manual and have looked through the adjustments in the book, and also on the decal on the battery box, but I'm not sure that I am understanding everything that I am reading. I have installed a pressure gauge on the outlet, or what I think is the outlet on the hydraulic pump, and not indicating any pressure at all. Is there linkage or any of the A, B, D, knobs that I could have in the wrong position to get the pump to work? The tractor is equipped with a 3 point, and I know all of them are aftermarket. But this one might be a little more aftermarket than most. Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, John

I would start out with the simplest things first. Are you sure the hydraulic fluid is at the proper level?

Is the PTO working/on? The PTO and hydraulic pump both operate at the same time. If the PTO is not turning, the pump is not on either. (you probably know that, but isn't clear from the first post)

I did make sure the oil level was full. This is the first that I have known that the PTO needs to be engaged for the pump to operate. I have engaged the PTO to make sure that it works, but it never occurred to me that the same shaft drives the hyd. pump. I'm really excited to go back out to the shop and see if that is the magic key. I'm sure that it is.
I may also need some help in doing all of the adjustments on the hyd. system. I will return and report. Thanks!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the PTO does not need to be engaged for WD 45 hydraulics to operate.

Apologies, I did try to research beforehand: "The WD45 has two clutches, the engine clutch operated by the left foot and the transmission clutch operated by the right hand. This allows live PTO power for two PTO points (one to the rear and one to the right side) and the hydraulic pump. The PTOs are activated by pulling the knob on the lower right side of the steering column. The hydraulics by the left steering column control." |

Dennis is right. On a WD 45 the PTO does not need to be on for the hydraulics to work. Put the tranny in neutral, take your foot off the foot clutch and push up on the. Lever on the left hand side of the steering wheel. Hydraulics should work. Up

You guys are geniuses. Engaged the PTO and the hydraulic pump works. It's relieving at 2800 PSI, but I'm not going to worry about that right now. When the 3 point was installed, they rerouted the outlet line from the pump directly to a 2 way control valve that operates the 3 point. The quadrant on the left side of the steering column does nothing, so I might need to research how it was originally plumbed in so that it works as originally designed. Thanks again for the help.

there are a lot things that are not making any sense, the pto dosnt need to be on to run the tractor hydralic pump but the foot clutch (engine clutch) does need to be out has someone hooked up adifferant lever , or is this pump hooked on the back of the pto

Could be an auxiliary PTO pump, we are not on the same page at this time. Pictures might help but that's generally a challenge to post.

I don't think they would have had to mod hydraulics for the 3 point. Most 3-point mods are just a mechanical connection to the original lift arms??!?!??!??

This is the factory hyd pump. All I can tell you is I engaged the pto, and the pump works. I understand how the hand clutch works to make the pto live. I have to use the lever on the hydraulic control valve for the 3 point to get the pump to operate. I do have pictures, but not sure how to post them.

Sounds like there have been some modifications done. Is the linkage to the left lever connected to the pump at all? If we can find a volunteer to post photos which you could e-mail to him or her and get them posted here. Do you have "Operating Instructions/Parts Illustration" manual? There are some good illustrations before you go too deep into the pump. Just trying to help.

When you start a new topic, you will see a menu at the top. The two icons for uploading and inserting a previously uploaded image don't seem very obvious to me, but the left icon will call up a menu that provides open and upload buttons. I exit and remove any crap that inserts and then select insert image button that allows me to select one of the images that I previously uploaded.

Thanks, rather than try that on my phone, I'll wait and try that at the office.

I live by the theory "even a blind sow finds an acorn once in a while." When the individual said that the PTO needed to be engaged for the pump to work, I was really excited to find something easy to fix this with. I ran out to the shop, engaged the pto, tried the left quadrant lever, and when nothing happened, I operated the lever on the control valve, and presto changeo, the 3 point came up and down. In my mind, it was engaging the pto that caused this miracle. After reading the other threads, I went back out to the shop after church and disengaged the pto, and low and behold the 3 point still came up and down, so you're all correct.
Dennis asked if the left lever is connected to the pump at all. Yes, I believe the operator manual calls this the "long rod". I move the left lever and this long rod does move up and down on the linkage on the side of the pump. Dallas Allis (DFW) gave me some instructions on how to post a picture, and evidently I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through that process. The icon that I'm looking for, is that the hyperlink icon at the top left hand of this post? I clicked on that, and could not see anything that I thought would get a picture downloaded. Thanks for enduring this long winded post, but I'm thrilled to find some knowledge out there on this old iron. In a previous life I was a mechanic/service manager for an Allis dealer in Brush, CO., but that has been 50 years ago. I worked on the 70 and 80 series tractors, and the N5, and N6 combines were just coming out when I changed occupations. The WD45 was old technology even at that time. Thanks again for the help. JL

Great. There are great resources on this website & they even extend beyond orange equipment. Next question?
