Same idea, different animals. There is the start of a JD engine swap into a HD21 over at Van Natta Dozers site. They aimed to start with a Cummins and detail the traps found which caused the selection of the JD - which should apply to a 16 too. Last time I looked the project had stalled before completion.

From memory, the the repower to Cummins on H.E.F was a complete success, and the owner never looked back. 855 cummins would be the most logical choice if you want away from 844 Allis

yes I think he calls himself 'HD16B' is on HEF. 855 conversion and tractor goes very well. He also converted the undercarriage to D7G chains rollers and segments.
From memory the headaches involve a adapter plate for flywheel housing to torque converter housing. but what he did is all documented on HEF. |

IIRC There were some FD 30s that had Cummins instead of Fiat engines so that might have helped a swap.

Thanks to all of you. In case it's of interest the situation is a hd16 with a broken crank and hasn't run in 10 year so or so is nearby and I have an old c above with a very solid 855 that I'd like to see put to use. The owner of the dozer don't think it's worth the trouble but the transmission has low hours on o.h. and the undercarriage is in very reasonable condition. I would certainly appreciate any voices of experience in aid to my decision. Thanks again for your time. Jeff. Ne south Dakota.
