We are considering a larger tractor than our B to pull a blade and few other things but biggest question is what to look for in a D-14. We found a narrow front D-14 with nice paint and rubber they are asking 2795 for, narrow front or wide front more common? Sounds like decent price but wondering what I should be looking for mechanically? Read another post talking about power steering? Thanks as always for your insight.

had 4, now down to 3 D-14s.. all wide fronts. Price is high ,unless comes with some implements. look fors.... does it come out of 3rd gear, coasting on a bit of a down hill ? generator or alternator ? if generator, if there's a 'cover band' on genny, it's 6 volt. 6 volt or 12v ? does it have 'lift latches' ( Snap-Coupler system) ? leak around the PTO shift lever ? BOTH brakes work ? rear lift leakdown with load ? opmeter(tach) there and working ? traction boost gauge work (rare is it does...) PA rims or combine rims ? rear tires OE were 12-26,common to see 13.6-26 or 14.9-26 now Power Director( the Big Stick) works ( hi-nu-lo ) ranges side cover tin under gas tank ? belt pulley and or lever for it ? headlights/taillights ? tractor number, left side of bellhousing, will tell year it was made. pictures from all sides would really help. while 'high' in price, offer $2200, settle for $2500 IF there's a rear blade . heck you can't by a new 'riding lawmower' for that money today ! I'm sure others will post stuff I've missed..... Jay

They are not new any more. Could be 60 years old. So, could be things wrong. MACK

Power steering was always an option on D-14-15-17's. I'd say 50% on the 14's. D-15's closer to 80% and 17's at 90% in my territory. Never seen an S-3 or 4 D-17 without power steering but it was still an option.

Could be a Dupont rebuild. Make it look good and sell it for big money! Was anything done to the engine? Receipts? If you can, unscrew the drain plug on the oil pan. don't remove it, just unscrew it enough to get a sample out of the bottom. That'll tell you if there is coolant in the oil. Inspect the area around the rear valve stems. If they are rusting out bad that could mean new rims. A lot of money for 26" tires. Personally, for that much money I would pass. You should be able to pick up a good useable 14 for under $1500.

I’ve never been lucky enough to find a good useable D14 for under $1500. Location probably has a lot to do with it, here a useable one will be $2500 to $4000. Unless you get extremely lucky at an auction. And I have been looking for years for them. I have a nice D14, but it would cost someone a lot more than $1500 to own it.
But like I said prices vary dramatically depending on your location. |
