   Getting ready to use the WD, I drove it over to the barn, shut it off, and aired up the tires. Then I climbed on, turned the key, and pulled the starter handle. 
BANG!
I saw the top of the battery in front of me go straight up and disappear. It sailed over my head and landed inside the barn door behind me.

The battery lasted a year and two months. We'll see how long the next one survives.

	First I hope your are OK and did not get any acid on you. Had that happen to a Ford car with my wife driving at a convenience store. Never new what caused it to explode.

	Definitely check to make sure your alternator isn't putting out too much voltage. It looks like it shorted out inside and caused the hydrogen gas inside the battery to go boom. Hurst

	Steve, now thats scary!. A few years ago I plowed snow with my old Ford truck, and it was cold that morning-15 or so , several hours later I heard a loud boom. Went outside and looked around , nothing seemed out of place. A couple hours later I was walking past my plow truck and noticed a peice of black plastic in the snow . A peice of battery. Top of battery gone! Glad your safe. Glad I wasn't leaning over my battery checking oil or jump starting something . Wonder why this happens ?
	I started out years ago with nothing.... after this divorce , I'll be getting most of it back.........

	when i was about 17 {25 years ago} in my moms station wagon i came out of a gas station and cranked the engine, a loud boom scared the s out of me. blew the whole side of the batt out. we never found anything wrong and havent seen it happen since. i'm glade mine was under the hood.

	Steve, I hope you've poured a couple of boxes of baking soda all over the old girl! if not thing are gonna get eaten up real quick, glad you're OK, I had one in a boat blow on me growing up, if my Dad hadn't pushed me right out of the boat into the water, I don't know what would have happened! When I climbed out of the water, what was left of my clothes looked like swiss cheese.

	I would say Hurst nailed it, battery over charged. Check your voltage regulator. Had the same thing happen on a gas drive welder. G3

	WOW is right. That was a close one. I have never had a battery blow up on me and I have abused them in the past. Things like this will make some of us a little more careful when jumping etc. Keep our heads away from the battery is the lesson here. Thanks, Barry

	Have had several blow up, the hydrogen gas alone is explosive but needs a spark of some sort to cause the ignition. Can be traced to poor connection inside battery in most cases. One of the lead bars connecting the cells must have a break or gap in it. Had a couple of rebuilt batteries do it and had New AC battery that was in a MF blow when i first installed into tractor, as soon as I hit starter the top blew off. Yes wash everything down with soda-water to neutralize the acid.

	Just had this happen with a 1 year old battery in a 2008 chevy. Hood was open with one guy standing about 3ft away. His ears rang for a while.
